History

Quantapoint was founded as K2T, Inc (or K2T) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1991 by Eric Hoffman, Pradeep Khosla, Takeo Kanade and other Carnegie Mellon University faculty members. K2T focused on creating custom robotics and 3D range-finding imaging systems to help them navigate complex environments. The most notable are the laser range-finding system created in 1992 for the DANTE walking robot that explored Mount Erebus in Antarctica as part of a NASA sponsored competition [http://www.ri.cmu.edu/pub_files/pub2/wettergreen_david_1993_2/wettergreen_david_1993_2.pdf Exploring Mount Erebus by Walking Robot] and the 360-degree phase-based 3D laser scanner named SceneModeler created in 1997.{{cite web|url=http://www.quantapoint.com/qp/history|title=History|publisher=|access-date=2009-10-29|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090809151127/http://www.quantapoint.com/qp/history/|archive-date=2009-08-09|url-status=dead}}

The company name was changed to Quantapoint in 1999 to reflect the focus on 3D laser scanning hardware, software and services.

Initially, Quantapoint focused on using 3D laser scanning to "digitize" buildings and create 2D drawings, 3D models and/or other animations or visualizations for renovations, additions or historic preservation. Notable projects include the Museum of Modern Art, the Theban Mapping Project in the Valley of the Kings,{{cite web|url=http://www.thebanmappingproject.com/about/work_article_13_1.html|title=Historical Overview of the Theban Mapping Project - Theban Mapping Project|publisher=}} Monticello[http://www.monticello.org/press/newsletter/2005/winter/explorer_05w.pdf Monticello Explorer attracts users, praise] {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081120104847/http://www.monticello.org/press/newsletter/2005/winter/explorer_05w.pdf |date=November 20, 2008 }} and the Guggenheim Museum.{{cite web|url=http://archrecord.construction.com/news/daily/archives/070926guggenheim.asp|title=Guggenheim Restoration Has the Wright Stuff|publisher=}}

Since 2002, Quantapoint has served the chemical, petroleum and power industries both globally and within the United States. Quantapoint has also worked with the United States General Services Administration (GSA).{{cite news |url=https://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS124203+07-Oct-2009+MW20091007 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20130201142915/http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS124203+07-Oct-2009+MW20091007 |url-status=dead |archive-date=1 February 2013 |title=Quantapoint Awarded GSA Laser Scanning IDIQ Contract |date=7 October 2009 |work=Reuters}}

Quantapoint has received several patents and awards[https://archive.today/20110829174556/http://www.quantapoint.com/awards/ Awards Web Page] for the 3D laser scanner hardware and 3D laser scanning data software that it has developed.

3D laser scanner hardware

Quantapoint uses both its own 3D laser scanner hardware, the SceneModeler 5 and SceneModeler 9, and the Photon from Faro Systems.{{cite web|url=http://www.tenlinks.com/News/PR/FARO/111908_quantapoint.htm|title=Nov 19 - FARO Delivers 6 Photon Laser Scanners to Quantapoint|access-date=2009-10-29|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091216020026/http://www.tenlinks.com/news/PR/FARO/111908_quantapoint.htm|archive-date=2009-12-16|url-status=dead}} Quantapoint has a fleet of more than twenty (20) 3D laser scanners.{{cite web|url=http://www.sparllc.com/archiveviewer.php?vol=07&num=10&file=vol07no10-02|title=SPAR 3D - News & Information on 3D Technology|work=SPAR 3D}}
