History

In April 1900 it was announced that the Queensland Government would be publishing a monthly mining journal under the editorship of William Hodgkinson, whose previous experience included exploration, journalism, gold mining and politics (including being the Minister for Mines from 1888 to 1893).{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article196021808|title=QUEENSLAND|date=7 April 1900|newspaper=The Age|issue=14,069|location=Victoria, Australia|page=10|via=National Library of Australia|access-date=11 July 2016}}{{Cite QldMLA|access-date=10 July 2016}}{{cite web|url=http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/members/former/member-register|title=Hodgkinson, Mr William Oswald|publisher=Queensland Parliament|work=Re-Member Database|access-date=10 July 2016}} Its first issue appeared in June 1900, having been printed at the Queensland Government Printing Office.{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article173523876|title=Queensland Mining.|date=16 June 1900|newspaper=The Telegraph|issue=8,603|location=Queensland, Australia|page=8|via=National Library of Australia|access-date=11 July 2016}}{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article19044953|title=QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT MINING JOURNAL|date=18 June 1900|newspaper=The Brisbane Courier|issue=13,239|location=Queensland, Australia|volume=LVI|page=6|via=National Library of Australia|access-date=11 July 2016}}{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article113712300|title=A QUEENSLAND VENTURE|date=19 June 1900|newspaper=Evening News|issue=10,305|location=New South Wales, Australia|page=4|via=National Library of Australia|access-date=11 July 2016}} Despite being a publication of the Queensland Government, the journal's second issue in July 1900 criticised the government over issues of mine safety.{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article174127398|title=Self-Criticism.|date=23 July 1900|newspaper=The Telegraph|issue=8634|location=Queensland, Australia|page=2|via=National Library of Australia|access-date=11 July 2016}}
