Qvwm is a window manager,{{Cite web|url=https://www.hurriyet.com.tr/teknoloji/linux-nedir-ve-ne-ise-yarar-linux-isletim-sistemi-nasil-indirilir-ve-kullanilir-41788817|title=Linux nedir ve ne işe yarar? Released in 1996 under the GNU General Public License. The project's name comes from wordplay references to Japanese words and Roman numbers.{{cite web|url=http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reports/2850/1|title=From the Desktop: Q Stands For QVWM and Quality Sarcasm|last=Proffitt|first=Brian|work=LinuxPlanet|date=2001-01-02|access-date=2014-04-30|archive-date=2014-05-02|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140502002542/http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reports/2850/1|url-status=live}} In 2000, Linux Format called Qvwm "an unusually impressive imposter".{{cite journal|url=http://www.tuxradar.com/content/archives-best-window-managers-2000|title=From the archives: the best window managers of 2000|author=|journal=Linux Format|issue=2|date=2009-03-10|orig-year=First published in 2000|access-date=2014-04-30|via=TuxRadar|archive-date=2017-12-17|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171217070835/http://www.tuxradar.com/content/archives-best-window-managers-2000|url-status=live}}
Unlike Windows 95's registry, Qvwm uses a textual configuration file. Qvwm includes virtual desktops, a feature lacking in Windows 95. One reviewer criticized this practice as "against qvwm's stated purpose."{{Cite web|url=https://www.gilesorr.com/papers/otherwm2003/x542.html|title=QVWM|website=www.gilesorr.com|access-date=2021-05-09|archive-date=2017-10-19|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171019113531/http://www.gilesorr.com/papers/otherwm2003/x542.html|url-status=live}} Apart from standard X libraries, the only software library it depends on is X PixMap (libxpm). The developers had intended to develop a full class library called libqv but this never occurred.
The original author of Qvwm, Kenichi Kourai, no longer maintains it, but in 2006 the project was picked up by Ivan Kurmanov, who applied patches made by the Debian project and added features of his own.
Qvwm was included in Debian since 1999{{cite web|title=Debian Package Tracking System - qvwm|url=https://packages.qa.debian.org/q/qvwm.html|website=Debian Package Tracking System|access-date=27 September 2016|archive-date=3 October 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161003130831/https://packages.qa.debian.org/q/qvwm.html|url-status=live}} but was removed in early 2009 because of the lack of updates as well as using deprecated libraries.{{cite web|title=#508232 RM: qvwm -- RoM; buggy, depends on deprecated libs|url=https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=508232|website=Debian Bug report logs|access-date=27 September 2016|archive-date=9 May 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210509222735/https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=508232|url-status=live}}
In 2020, the source code of Qvwm is available on GitHub (under the user Asveikau) so this window manager can be compile-install to Linux (BSDs, Minix, etc.) through "configure, make, install" method (or any method similar or better than this).{{Cite web |author=Asveikau |date=Jul 8, 2020 |title=Qvwm window manager for X. |url=https://github.com/asveikau/qvwm |access-date=Apr 4, 2022 |website=Github}}
