Critical reception

A critic from The Times of India wrote, "Right from the romance between a school girl and a happy-go-lucky youngster to the devious manner in which the families of the lovers try to keep them apart, the film brings to mind the 2004 trendsetter [Kaadhal]".{{Cite web|url=https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/tamil/movie-reviews/raattinam/movie-review/13248908.cms|title=Raattinam Movie Review {3/5}: Critic Review of Raattinam by Times of India|work=The Times of India|date=18 May 2012|access-date=25 January 2025}} A critic from The Hindu wrote, "Raattinam is a film that succeeds in surprising you on more occasions than just one — the biggest surprise coming right at the end, in the form of the climax. To be fair to director K. S. Thangasamy, his story may appear clichéd, but the message he communicates through his film is relatively fresh and one that makes sense."{{cite news|url=https://www.thehindu.com/features/cinema/raattinam-a-ride-full-of-surprises/article3436088.ece|title=Raattinam - A ride full of surprises|work=The Hindu|url-access=subscription|date=19 May 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200310151619/https://www.thehindu.com/features/cinema/raattinam-a-ride-full-of-surprises/article3436088.ece|archive-date=10 March 2020|last1=Manigandan|first1=K.
