Research
Since 2003, Rajeev has been involved in interdisciplinary research that generates information to support conservation decision making in tropical aquatic ecosystems, particularly in the Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot.{{cite web|url=https://shoalconservation.org/an-interview-with-rajeev-raghavan/|title= An interview with Rajeev Raghavan – SHOAL Conservation|access-date=23 Oct 2022}}
His work cuts across multiple disciplines from systematics, to molecular ecology and biogeography, freshwater fisheries and conservation policies. His research group{{cite web|url=https://www.fishlab.in|title=Rajeev Research Group at KUFOS|access-date=23 Oct 2022}} is globally recognized for advancing the knowledge-base on understanding the diversity of freshwater fishes on the Indian subcontinent, resulting in the discovery and description of 21 new species (including three new genera and two new families).{{cite web|url=https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/worlds-largest-cave-fish-found-in-india|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210228223402/https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/worlds-largest-cave-fish-found-in-india|url-status=dead|archive-date=February 28, 2021|title=World's largest cave fish discovered in India|website=National Geographic Society |access-date=23 Oct 2022}}{{cite web|url=https://indianexpress.com/article/india/new-freshwater-fish-species-discovered-from-western-ghats-6485537/|title=New freshwater fish species discovered from Western Ghats|access-date=23 Oct 2022}}{{cite web|url=https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/three-new-species-of-fishes-found-in-western-ghats/article31551352.ece|title=Three new species of fishes found in Western Ghats|website=The Hindu |access-date=23 Oct 2022}} Working with collaborators, he has also contributed to solving long-standing taxonomic and nomenclatural issues in Indian fish taxonomy.{{cite web|url=https://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-kerala/after-150-years-a-fish-gets-a-scientific-name/article24447850.ece|title=After 150 years, a fish gets a scientific name|website=The Hindu |access-date=23 Oct 2022}}{{cite journal|title=Unraveling a 146 Years Old Taxonomic Puzzle: Validation of Malabar Snakehead, Species-Status and Its Relevance for Channid Systematics and Evolution| doi=10.1371/journal.pone.0021272|pmid=21731689| pmc=3123301|volume=6|issue = 6|journal=PLOS ONE|page=e21272|last1=Benziger|first1=Allen|year=2011| bibcode=2011PLoSO...621272B|doi-access=free}}
