With the cession of California to the United States following the Mexican-American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored. As required by the Land Act of 1851, a claim for Rancho Atascadero was filed with the Public Land Commission in 1852,[http://digicoll.lib.berkeley.edu/record/265854 United States. A second claim was filed by Maria Antonia Ortega in 1853, but was rejected by the Commission due to lack of evidence of a grant.[http://digicoll.lib.berkeley.edu/record/267612 United States. District Court (California : Southern District) Land Case 271 SD]
