Controversies
=Data collection for Google=
In 2019, Google contracted with Randstad to collect data for its Pixel 4 facial recognition authentication feature. Google's stated goal with the project was to make the feature more inclusive by collecting facial data from people with dark skin, and those participating in the research were given a $5 gift certificate. However, the New York Daily News reported that Randstad project leaders allegedly directed its workers to maximize data collection by deceiving participants and targeting homeless people in Atlanta, Georgia.{{cite news | url=https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-google-darker-skin-tones-facial-recognition-pixel-20191002-5vxpgowknffnvbmy5eg7epsf34-story.html | title=Google using dubious tactics to target people with 'darker skin' in facial recognition project: sources | last1=Otis | first1=Ginger Adams | last2=Dillon | first2=Nancy | work=New York Daily News | date=2 October 2019}}{{cite news |url=https://gizmodo.com/report-google-contractors-used-shady-methods-to-scan-d-1838770371|title=Report: Google Contractors Used Shady Methods To Scan Dark-Skinned People's Faces For New Pixel 4 Feature |last=Song |first=Victoria |work=Gizmodo |date=7 October 2019}} Randstad stated that, after hearing concerns about how information was presented to participants and obtaining consent, the project was temporarily suspended and project leaders were retrained.{{cite news | url=https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-witness-saw-homeless-people-selling-face-scans-google-five-dollars-20191004-j6z2vonllnerpiuakt6wrp6l44-story.html | last1=Otis | first1=Ginger Adams | last2=Dillon | first2=Nancy | title=City worker saw homeless people lined up to get $5 gift card for face scan uploaded to Google | work=New York Daily News | date=3 October 2019}} After the report was published, Google shut down its field research and was investigating the allegations.{{cite news | url=https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/4/20899612/google-suspend-pixel-4-facial-scan-atlanta-randstad | title=Google has suspended its controversial 'field research' that allegedly scanned homeless people | last=Hollister | first=Sean | work=The Verge | date=4 October 2019}}
