Composition
The hip hop song references a line from the first Marshall Mathers LP, on the song "I'm Back", where he mentioned the Columbine school shooting, rapping "Take seven kids from Columbine / Put 'em all in a line, add an AK-47, a revolver and a '9." The verse was censored when originally released, and is included in "Rap God" to test public reaction.{{cite web | url=http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20131014/ENT04/310140108/Emimem-strikes-again-Rap-God-single | title=Emimem strikes again with 'Rap God' single | publisher=MediaNews Group | work=The Detroit News | date=October 14, 2013 | access-date=October 15, 2013 | author=Graham, Adam | archive-date=October 15, 2013 | archive-url=https://archive.today/20131015122839/http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20131014/ENT04/310140108/Emimem-strikes-again-Rap-God-single | url-status=dead }} Eminem references the Clinton–Lewinsky scandal in order to demonstrate his longevity as a dominant force in the rap industry, thus establishing himself as an "immortal god".{{cite web | url=http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1715644/eminem-rap-god-decoded.jhtml | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131015205907/http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1715644/eminem-rap-god-decoded.jhtml | url-status=dead | archive-date=October 15, 2013 | title=Eminem's 'Rap God' Decoded: What He's Really Saying On Venomous Track | publisher=Viacom | work=MTV News | date=October 15, 2013 | access-date=October 16, 2013 | author=Markman, Rob}}

Critical reception
Consequence of Sound stated that the song is "anything but godly", the lyricism "falls victim to dated references [...] and the tired technique of using other rappers' monikers to complete rhymes." They also noted that the beat is "pedestrian at best", and that altogether the song "[lacks] the commercial appeal" of "Berzerk".{{cite web |url=http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/10/listen-to-eminems-new-song-rap-god-which-is-anything-but-godly/ |title=Listen to Eminem's new song "Rap God", which is anything but godly |author=Staff |publisher=Consequence of Sound |date=October 14, 2013 |access-date=October 17, 2013 }} Lijas of Time gave the song a positive review, stating that "the world can expect an immortal recording" based on "Rap God" and the album's lead single, "Berzerk".{{cite magazine | url=https://entertainment.time.com/2013/10/15/eminems-new-rap-god-is-divine/ | title=Eminem's New 'Rap God' is Divine | publisher=Time Inc. | magazine=Time | date=October 15, 2013 | access-date=October 15, 2013 | author=Lijas, Per}} Jim Farber of the Daily News compared the song to The Marshall Mathers LP, stating that the song "revives the super-sick humor of that era, which comes as a relief after all the internalizations and ruminating of Em’s more recent work".{{cite web | url=http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music-arts/eminem-rap-god-throwback-rapper-playful-prime-review-article-1.1486452 | title=Eminem's 'Rap God' is throwback to rapper's playful prime: music review | publisher=Mortimer Zuckerman | work=Daily News | date=October 15, 2013 | access-date=October 16, 2013 | last=Farber | first=Jim}} Kory Grow of Rolling Stone also gave the song a positive review, praising that instead of "giving his chorus to an R&B crooner like Rihanna or the New Royales' Liz Rodrigues", "he instead delivers a straight rap refrain about feeling like a rap deity. His verses recall hip-hop history ... as much as his own history". Nick Hill of Contact Music praised the song's rhyming and lyrical content. He exclaimed that the verse beginning at 4:20 best displays Eminem's rapping abilities.
Complex ranked the song number 14 on their list of the 50 best songs of 2013. They commented saying, "'Rap God' is another entry in the "Oh My God, This Guy Raps Better Than Anyone On The Planet" category. They said, "Within the seemingly never-ending verbal waterfall, Em touches on just about anything he could, should or would: his underground origins, the criticisms of his lyrics, the positive power his words have had for so many, and pop culture references. It's all done with impeccable technical tact, including a brief section of triple time mayhem.
