History

The club was founded in 1888. The teacher Edward O'Toole was the first captain of the club; he was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) and an early influence on Kevin Barry.{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=-y7-DwAAQBAJ&dq=rathvilly+1888+gaelic&pg=PT8|title=Kevin Barry|first=Carmel Uí|last=Cheallaigh|date=16 September 2020|publisher=Mercier Press Ltd|isbn=9781781177464|via=Google Books}} Rathvilly won its first Carlow Junior Football Championship in 1916. Rathvilly play at Fr. The club crest displays the motto bene cultō nīl ōrnātiu[s].
