Origin
The origin of the Ratnu Charanas is considered to be in the same time period as that of Sindhaych Charanas, around 8th to 9th century CE. They are the descendants of Ratanji Charan who once saved Rawal Devraj's life, a Bhati chieftain who later founded Derawar.{{Cite web |last=कविया |first=संपादक, मगराज उज्ज्वल ; प्रस्तावना, शक्तिदान |title=उदयराज उज्ज्वल ग्रन्थावली |url=http://www-lib.tufs.ac.jp/opac/recordID/catalog.bib/BB16255850 |access-date=2022-08-24 |website=東京外国語大学附属図書館OPAC |quote=चारणों की 120 प्रमुख शाखाओं में अधिकांशतः प्रसिद्ध पूर्वपुरुषों के नामों से ही प्रवर्तित हैं, यथा – आढा, सांदू आशिया, कविया, खिड़िया, रतनू, देथा, वणसूर, लाळस, संढायच, देभल, रोहड़िया, कनिया इत्यादि ।}}{{Cite book |last=Singh |first=Hardyal |url=https://www.worldcat.org/oclc/977890782 |title=The castes of Marwar, being census report of 1891 |date=1990 |publisher=Books Treasure |location=Jodhpur |pages=xi |language=English |oclc=977890782}} After founding Derawar, Rawal Devraj called upon his childhood friend Ratanji and honored him with the position of Prolpat-Patvi of the Bhati dynasty.{{Cite book |last=Goswami |first=Sambodh |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=do_aAAAAMAAJ |title=Female Infanticide and Child Marriage |date=2007 |publisher=Rawat Publications |isbn=978-81-316-0112-9 |language=en |quote=The Sodas were the pol - paats of the Maharana of Mewar , the Rohariyas were the pol - paats of the Rathores of Marwar , Bikaner and Kishangarh and of the Kachwahas of Jaipur and Alwar , the Adas were the pol - paats of the Deora sect of the Chauhan clan of Sirohi , and the Ratnus were the pol – paats of the Bhatis of Jaisalmer.}} Subsequently, Ratnu Charanas held this position in the kingdoms of Jaisalmer and Pugal.{{Cite book |last=Kothiyal |first=Tanuja |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=IQS-DAAAQBAJ |title=Nomadic Narratives: A History of Mobility and Identity in the Great Indian Desert |date=2016-03-14 |publisher=Cambridge University Press |isbn=978-1-316-67389-8 |language=en |quote=After Devraj grew up and gained control of Jaisalmer, he recalled Ratnu from Sorath and made him his Barhat. History
Ratnus played an important role in the administration and polity of the region and held extensive sasan jagirs throughout Rajasthan. Many were influential poets, writers, and historians. The Ratnu family of Sikar formed one such bureaucratic lineage whose members were Diwans (Prime Minister) of the princely states of Sikar, Idar, Kishengarh, and Jhalawad.{{Cite book |last1=Rudolph |first1=Susanne Hoeber |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Djabj9gefZ0C |title=Essays on Rajputana: Reflections on History, Culture, and Administration |last2=Rudolph |first2=Lloyd I. |date=1984 |publisher=Concept Publishing Company |language=en |quote="At the outer edge of qualification norms is standing in one of the respectable (usually twice-born) and traditionally literate castes or communities of Rajputana-such as Rajputs, Oswals, Maheshwaris, Kayasths, Charans, Brahmans, and Muslims....the bureaucratic lineages in and out of power, whether from within (mutsaddi, Rajput, Muslim, Charan etc.)...Prominent Charan Dewans or senior court servants included Kaviraj (court poet) Shyamaldas at Udaipur and Kaviraj Murardan at Jodhpur."}}{{Cite book |last=Śekhāvata |first=Raghunāthasiṃha |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=5jpuAAAAMAAJ |title=Shekhawati Pradesh ka rajnitik itihas |date=1998 |publisher=Ṭhā.
