Raymell Mourice Rice (born January 22, 1987) is an American former professional football player who was a running back for six seasons with the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, earning first-team All-American honors in 2007. He was selected by the Ravens in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft. During his career, Rice was named to three Pro Bowls and was a member of the team that won Super Bowl XLVII. He is second in franchise rushing yards, rushing attempts, and rushing touchdowns, and is third in the franchise in combined touchdowns.

Rice became embroiled in controversy during the 2014 offseason when a video surfaced of him physically attacking his fiancée. After being indicted for aggravated assault, Rice was released by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL. Although Rice successfully appealed the indefinite suspension, the incident effectively ended his professional career as no teams signed him in free agency.

Early life

Rice was born to parents Janet Rice and Calvin Reed in New Rochelle, New York, on January 22, 1987. His father was killed in a drive-by shooting when Ray was a year old. Rice's cousin, Myshaun Rice-Nichols, was killed by a drunk driver when Rice was ten.{{Cite web |last=Beard |first=Zachary |date=May 19, 2010 |title=Ray Rice's Amazing Story |url=http://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/2010/5/19/1479729/ray-rices-amazing-story |access-date=March 22, 2019 |website=BaltimoreBeatdown.com |archive-date=August 15, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170815025656/https://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/2010/5/19/1479729/ray-rices-amazing-story |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |title=Ray Rice Biography |url=http://www.jockbio.com/Bios/R_Rice/R_Rice_bio.html |access-date=March 22, 2019 |website=JockBio |archive-date=November 27, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171127102831/http://www.jockbio.com/Bios/R_Rice/R_Rice_bio.html |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |last=Darcy |first=Kieran |date=January 31, 2013 |title=Janet Rice is Ray's Super inspiration |url=https://www.espn.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/8902984/super-bowl-xlvii-new-rochelle-janet-rice-mother-baltimore-ravens-star-ray-rice-inspiring-son-super-journey |access-date=September 27, 2022 |website=ESPN.com |archive-date=March 7, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160307034702/http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/8902984/super-bowl-xlvii-new-rochelle-janet-rice-mother-baltimore-ravens-star-ray-rice-inspiring-son-super-journey |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |last=Lewis |first=Brian |date=January 24, 2013 |title=Fueled by tragedy, Ravens' Rice never has forgotten roots on ascent to NFL stardom |url=https://nypost.com/2013/01/24/fueled-by-tragedy-ravens-rice-never-has-forgotten-roots-on-ascent-to-nfl-stardom/ |access-date=September 27, 2022 |website=NY Post |archive-date=September 27, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220927194930/https://nypost.com/2013/01/24/fueled-by-tragedy-ravens-rice-never-has-forgotten-roots-on-ascent-to-nfl-stardom/ |url-status=live }}
