Riders used brakeless fixed-gear bicycles. There were often crashes during the races due to the high speeds and technical courses.{{Cite web |date=2015-04-27 |title=Red Hook Criterium's no-brake bike race sweeps cycling world - CBS News |url=https://www.cbsnews.com/news/red-hook-criterium-no-brake-bike-race-sweeps-cycling-world/ |access-date=2024-05-07 |website=www.cbsnews.com |language=en-US}} It was at one time sponsored by Rockstar Games, among others.

A women's competition was added to the event in 2014.{{Cite web |last=Chabanov |first=Dan |date=2017-04-27 |title=An introduction to the Red Hook Crit: The fixed-gear criterium that's changing bicycle racing |url=https://velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-racing/an-introduction-to-the-red-hook-crit-the-fixed-gear-criterium-thats-changing-bicycle-racing/ |access-date=2024-05-07 |website=Velo |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |date=2014-02-14 |title=Rockstar Games Presents the 2014 Red Hook Criterium Championship Cycling Series |url=https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20140214005114/en/Rockstar-Games-Presents-the-2014-Red-Hook-Criterium-Championship-Cycling-Series |access-date=2024-05-07 |website=www.businesswire.com |language=en}}
