Halse was educated at St Paul's School, London and Brasenose College, Oxford.Who was Who, 1897–1990 (London, A & C Black, 1991), {{ISBN|0-7136-3457-X}} He was ordained in 1906 and was an assistant priest at St Saviour's Poplar[http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/Poplar/churches.htm Church history] and then priest in charge of St Nicholas' Blackwall.
