Career

Libuda was born in Wendlinghausen near Lemgo. His tremendous skill as a dribbler was a major factor in Borussia Dortmund's 1966 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup championship{{cite web | url = http://www.11freunde.de/geschichtsstunde/101306/der_10000-mark-treffer | title = Der 10000-Mark-Treffer | language = de | publisher = 11freunde | date = 2 November 2011| access-date = 2 May 2012 | first = Martin | last = Kaluza }} and the West Germany national team's hard-won qualification and its third-place finish in the 1970 FIFA World Cup. In the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final in 1966 he scored the final goal against Liverpool F.C. to earn a 2–1 extra time victory for Dortmund.{{cite web | url = http://en.archive.uefa.com/competitions/ecwc/history/season=1965/intro.html | title = 1965/66: Stan the man for Dortmund | publisher = UEFA | access-date = 13 May 2012 | url-status = dead | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140510160346/http://en.archive.uefa.com/competitions/ecwc/history/season%3D1965/intro.html | archive-date = 10 May 2014 | df = dmy-all }}

Libuda played for FC Schalke 04 from 1961 until 1976 with two interruptions: from 1965 until 1968 he played for Borussia Dortmund, and 1972–73 for RC Strasbourg.

Between 1963 and 1971, Libuda gained 26 caps for the West Germany national team and scored three goals.{{Cite web | url = https://www.rsssf.org/miscellaneous/libuda-intl.html | title = Reinhard 'Stan' Libuda - International Appearances | first = Matthias | last = Arnhold | date = 8 June 2017 | access-date = 14 June 2017 | publisher = RSSSF}} In the German Bundesliga he played 264 games and scored 28 goals for FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund.{{Cite web | url = https://www.rsssf.org/players/libudadata.html | title = Reinhard 'Stan' Libuda - Matches and Goals in Bundesliga | first = Matthias | last = Arnhold | date = 8 June 2017 | access-date = 14 June 2017 | publisher = RSSSF}}

Later he was involved in the Bundesligaskandal of 1971. The shy Libuda later suffered from cancer, and died from the complications of a stroke in Gelsenkirchen.

Libuda gained his nickname "Stan" after the English player Stanley Matthews who played in the same position and who was widely praised for his dribbling skills.{{cite web | url = https://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/obituary-reinhard-libuda-1311690.html | title = Obituary: Reinhard Libuda | language = de | work = The independent | date = 27 August 1996 | access-date = 2 May 2012 | first = Norman | last = Fox}} Fans of Schalke used a 1960s slogan of a German Evangelical Church Assembly Nobody can get past God to expand it with – except Stan Libuda. The slogan is part of a musical made about Schalke.{{cite web | url = http://www.zeit.de/online/2007/15/bundesliga-nachspiel | title = Ist Gott ein Fußball-Fan? |trans-title=Is God a Football Supporter? | language = de | date = 6 April 2007 | access-date = 5 February 2016 | first = Christoph | last = Seils}}
