History
After Van Zandt's 1989 album Revolution lacked attention, his then label, RCA, turned down the demos for his next album, Born Again Savage, stating that "rock music was over." By 1994, due to the shift in popularity from rock to pop music, and his lack of a recording contract, he started to record Born Again Savage with U2 bassist Adam Clayton, eventually resulting in the creation of his own record label.{{Cite web|url=http://www.littlesteven.com/essays-bas2.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20000925224255/http://www.littlesteven.com/essays-bas2.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=2000-09-25|title=Little Steven Online|date=2000-09-25|access-date=2019-12-14}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.u2wanderer.org/disco/steven.html|title=..:: U2 Discography - Born Again Savage Album / Little Steven - U2 Wanderer.Org ::..|website=www.u2wanderer.org|access-date=2019-12-14}}
After the success of the Underground Garage radio show, which first premiered on April 6, 2002, Van Zandt expanded the company to include radio, live events, TV, artist management, and a subsidiary record label, Wicked Cool Records.{{Cite web|url=http://www.shorefire.com/artists/littlesteven/pr_littlesteven_03_31_03.html|title=Happy Birthday, Underground Garage|last=|first=|date=March 31, 2003|website=Shore Fire Media|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20061026045055/http://www.shorefire.com/artists/littlesteven/pr_littlesteven_03_31_03.html|archive-date=October 26, 2006|access-date=December 14, 2019}}
Musician and longtime friend of Van Zandt, Jean Beauvoir, took a break to serve as CEO and Managing Director of the company for six and a half years, from 2004 to 2011, before returning to performing.{{Cite web|url=http://rockunited.com/beauvoir2010.htm|title=Jean Beauvoir interviewed by The Bailey Bros (2010 RockUnited.Com)|website=rockunited.com|access-date=2019-12-14}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.jeanbeauvoir.com/about|title=Jean Beauvoir - About|website=mysite-4|language=en|access-date=2019-12-14}}
In July 2013, it was announced that Marc Brickman would become the head of Renegade Management. Van Zandt made the decision after hiring him to put together the lighting for The Rascals' Once Upon a Dream tour.{{Cite web|url=https://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwmusic/article/Steven-Van-Zandts-Renegade-Nation-Co-Appoints-Marc-Brickman-as-Partner-20130724|title=Steven Van Zandt's Renegade Nation Co. Van Zandt's record label, Wicked Cool Records, was created in 2004 with the purpose of supporting new rock bands, inspired by the Underground Garage radio show. The majority of the bands signed to the label have experience with smaller, independent labels, with rare exceptions. The label also reissues some albums that have not been previously commercially successful. In 2007, Wicked Cool had a partnership with retailer Best Buy so that albums heard on Underground Garage could be easily found in stores.{{Cite web|url=https://youthjournalism.org/wicked-cool-record-company/|title=A Wicked Cool Record Company|date=2007-01-27|website=Youth Journalism International|language=en-US|access-date=2019-12-14}} The first album to be released by Wicked Cool Records was Davie Allan and the Arrows' Fuzz for the Holidays, released on December 14, 2004.{{Cite web|url=http://www.shorefire.com/artists/littlesteven/pr_littlesteven_12_02_04.html|title=Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records is Born with the Release of Davie Allan & the Arrows 'Fuzz for the Holidays' on Dec. 14th|last=|first=|date=December 2, 2004|website=Shore Fire Media|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060721224433/http://www.shorefire.com/artists/littlesteven/pr_littlesteven_12_02_04.html|archive-date=July 21, 2006|access-date=December 14, 2019}} Other early releases include Strange Magic by The Charms, The Mindbending Sounds of...The Chesterfield Kings, Mastermind by the Cocktail Slippers, and the tribute album CBGB Forever.{{Cite web|url=https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.pointblankmag.com/tag/little-steven-wicked-cool-renegade-nation/&prev=search|title=The Multi-Faceted Little Steven (Translated from Spanish)|last=de la Torre|first=Mariano|date=March 2009|website=Point Blank Magazine|access-date=December 14, 2019}}{{Cite web|url=https://usatoday30.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-12-07-van-zandt-label_x.htm|title=Little Steven starts own record label - USATODAY.com|website=usatoday30.usatoday.com|access-date=2019-12-15}} The label is also known for its compilation albums Little Steven's Underground Garage presents The Coolest Songs in the World.
