On 9 February 2017, Alma was announced as the French representative to the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, with the song "Requiem". As France is a member of the "Big Five", she automatically advanced to the final, held on 13 May 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine.{{Cite web|last=Jordan|first=Paul|url=http://www.eurovision.tv/page/news?id=kyiv_to_host_eurovision_2017|title=Kyiv to host Eurovision 2017!|date=9 September 2016|website=eurovision.tv|publisher=European Broadcasting Union|access-date=11 September 2016}}{{cite web|last1=Jordan|first1=Paul|title=Semi-Final Allocation Draw on Monday, pots revealed|url=http://www.eurovision.tv/page/news?id=semi-final_allocation_draw_on_monday_pots_revealed|website=eurovision.tv|publisher=European Broadcasting Union|access-date=25 January 2016|date=21 January 2016}}{{cite web|last1=Davies|first1=Megan|title=France: Alma to Sing "Requiem" in Kyiv|url=https://eurovoix.com/2017/02/09/france-alma-sing-requiem-kyiv/|website=eurovoix.com|publisher=Eurovoix|date=9 February 2017|access-date=17 February 2017}}
It was discovered during the week of 17 February 2017 that the artist's song had been recorded and performed prior to the EBU's submission deadline, 1 September 2016, which therefore violated the EBU's song submission policy.{{cite web|last1=Gallagher|first1=Robin|title=France: Alma Performed "Requiem" Before the Deadline - But Should It Be Disqualified?|url=http://wiwibloggs.com/2017/02/17/alma-requiem-before-deadline/174885/|website=wiwibloggs.com|publisher=Wiwibloggs|date=17 February 2017|access-date=17 February 2017}} Further research shows that Alma's song was performed at the end of January 2015.{{cite web|last1=Granger|first1=Anthony|title=France: "Requiem" Does Not Break Eurovision Rules According to France 2|url=https://eurovoix.com/2017/02/17/france-requiem-not-break-eurovision-rules-according-france-2/|website=eurovoix.com|publisher=Eurovoix|date=17 February 2017|access-date=17 February 2017}} While the French broadcaster had claimed they were not in breach of the EBU's submission rules, there had been no ultimate decision regarding the disqualification of France 2 from the contest up until then. It was reported on 21 February 2017 that Alma and her crew were in the production of a bilingual version of her song—the two languages being French and English—which implies that the act has ultimately not been disqualified from the contest.{{cite web|last1=Herbert|first1=Emily|title=France: "Requiem" to Be Performed in French & English|url=https://eurovoix.com/2017/02/21/france-requiem-bilingual/|website=eurovoix.com|publisher=Eurovoix|date=21 February 2017|access-date=21 February 2017}}
