Revue des questions historiques

An offshoot of the Revue du monde catholique,{{sfn|Noronha-DiVanna|2010|p=107}} the historical journal was established in July 1866 by the Marquis Gaston du Fresne de Beaucourt and published by Victor Palmé, and with an early editorial team of former students from the École des Chartes.{{sfn|Julia|2009|pp=Para 21}} It was a conservative and ultramontane journal,{{sfn|Lukacs|1977}} a part of a wider French Catholic intellectual movement in the late nineteenth century,{{sfn|Audren|2008}} part of an interlocking network of Catholic oriented scholarly journals.{{sfn|Cabanel|1994|pp=69, note 91}} Although it has been placed in the context of a "Catholic reconquista" of French culture{{sfn|den Boer|2011|pp=193=195}} and had a Catholic ethos it was based on the careful German historical methods of Historische Zeitschrift{{sfn|Larcher|1997}} with a commitment to careful study of primary sources.{{sfn|Julia|2009|pp=Para 21}}

In reaction Gabriel Monod set up Revue historique a decade later,{{sfn|Noronha-DiVanna|2010|p=111}} specifically naming RQH in the first issue,{{sfn|Mucchielli|1995|p=60}} and copying its format, structure and volume.{{sfn|Carbonell|1976|page=332}} There was an almost total lack of crossover of writers between the two journals,{{sfn|Lukacs|1977}} although the founder of Revue historique, Gustave Charles Fagniez did eventually write for the older journal after resigning from the journal he helped found due to its anti-clerical stances.{{sfn|Carbonell|1976|p=348}} The Revue historique has been seen by some historians as being particularly republican and Protestant in its early years in reaction.{{sfn|Guilbaud|2014}}{{sfn|Lukacs|1977}}

In 1867{{sfn|de l’Épinois|1867}} the Revue made public the documents of the Roman inquisition on the trials of Galileo.{{sfn|Clerke|1911}}

Historian Victor Nguyen has shownSee {{harvnb|Nguyen|1991|p=371}}, as cited in {{harvnb|Offenstadt|2014}}, para 19 that the counter-revolutionary ideas of the young Charles Maurras were influenced in part by the Revue's article Le procès de la révolution française.{{sfn|Mazel|1886}}

Later editors included Paul Allard{{sfn|Healy|1913}} and Jean Guiraud.{{sfn|Grondeux|2014}}
