Rewilding Britain is an organisation founded in 2015 that aims to promote the rewilding of Great Britain.{{cite web|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/rewilding-would-create-a-theme-park-not-a-return-to-nature-10397487.html|title='Rewilding' would create a theme park, not a return to nature|author=Boyd Tonkin|work=The Independent|date=17 July 2015}}{{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-33551678|title=Re-introducing big predators wrong, says crofting federation|date=16 July 2015|work=BBC News}} It is a registered charity in England, Wales and Scotland.{{cite web|url=http://apps.charitycommission.gov.uk/Showcharity/RegisterOfCharities/CharityWithoutPartB.aspx?RegisteredCharityNumber=1159373|title=Charity Overview|publisher=Charity Commission for England and Wales|accessdate=2015-07-19}}{{cite web|url=http://www.oscr.org.uk/search-oscr/charity-details?number=SC045685|title=Charity details|publisher=Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator|accessdate=2015-07-19}}

History

One of the people involved in setting up the charity was Guardian journalist and author George Monbiot who published Feral, a book about rewilding, in 2013.{{Cite news |url=https://inews.co.uk/essentials/lifestyle/george-monbiot-rewilding-countryside-end-sheep/ |title=George Monbiot on "rewilding" the countryside and the end of sheep |last=Piesing |first=Mark |date=2016-10-03 |work=i |access-date=2017-12-03}}

Rewilding Britain has called for the reintroduction of predators such as lynx and wolves which were hunted to extinction in Britain centuries ago.{{Cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-33533035|title=Call for lynx and wolf reintroduction|author=David Miller|date=15 July 2015|work=BBC News}} Its proposals have been often opposed by farmers.

In 2018 the Prime Minister, Theresa May, launched a 25-year environmental plan which gave encouragement to Rewilding Britain by, for example, supporting the reintroduction of the beaver and recognising the pioneering achievements of the Knepp Wildland in lowland rewilding.{{Cite web |url=http://www.rewildingbritain.org.uk/blog/25-year-environment-plan%E2%80%93is-this-a-turning-point-for-rewilding |title=25-year environment plan – is this a turning point for rewilding? |last1=Wrigley |last2=Driver |access-date=2018-02-08}}

In 2020, Rewilding Britain called for natural regeneration to be incentivised by the future Environmental Land Management Scheme and to be made the default approach to woodland creation unless trees are unable to establish or would take too long to arrive.{{Cite web|last=Barkham|first=Patrick|date=2020-12-15|title=Restore UK woodland by letting trees plant themselves, says report|url=http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/dec/15/restore-uk-woodland-trees-report-rewilding-britain|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=2020-12-16|website=The Guardian|language=en}}
