Reception

Chris Cornell said in an interview that the lyrical target of "Rhinosaur" was ambiguous and could be applied to several people or groups.{{cite book| author = CMJ Network, Inc.| title = CMJ New Music Monthly| url = https://books.google.com/books?id=HS0EAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA21| date = July 1996| publisher = CMJ Network, Inc.| page = 21 }} "Rhinosaur" was praised for having a massive groove with "stairstep guitar riffs" said to be adored by Soundgarden's guitarist Kim Thayil.{{cite book| author = CMJ Network, Inc.| title = CMJ New Music Monthly| url = https://books.google.com/books?id=2ywEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA13| date = June 1996| publisher = CMJ Network, Inc.| page = 13 }} Thayil said that the tuning of the instruments was unusual for Soundgarden. He said during an interview "Ben and I played on dropped-D, but Chris played in standard tuning. That's unusual for us. If one of us is in dropped-D, usually all three of us are."{{cite book| author = Guitar World| title = Guitar World Presents Nirvana and the Grunge Revolution| url = https://books.google.com/books?id=4R0xtoz_gQ8C&pg=PA157| date = 1998-10-01| publisher = Hal Leonard Corporation| isbn = 978-0-7935-9006-3| page = 157 }} The song also received moderate airplay by rock radio stations in America.
