Rhodocyclus purpureus is a species of bacteria.{{cite journal|last1=Pfennig|first1=N.|title=Rhodocyclus purpureus gen. nov. and sp. nov., a Ring-Shaped, Vitamin B12-Requiring Member of the Family Rhodospirillaceae|journal=International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology|volume=28|issue=2|year=1978|pages=283–288|issn=0020-7713|doi=10.1099/00207713-28-2-283|doi-access=free}} Its cells are half-ring-shaped and ring-shaped before cell division; the half-rings being 0.6 to 0.7 μm wide and 2.5 to 3.0 μm long. Open or compact coils of variable length are also formed. It is facultatively aerobic and its type strain is “Ames” 6770 (= DSM 168).
