Richard Evans (born 23 October 1969) is an artificial intelligence (AI) research scientist at DeepMind. His research focuses on integrating declarative interpretable logic-based systems with neural networks,[https://jair.org/index.php/jair/article/view/11172 Learning Explanatory Rules from Noisy Data][https://medium.com/@GaryMarcus/the-deepest-problem-with-deep-learning-91c5991f5695 The deepest problem with deep learning][https://openreview.net/forum?id=SkZxCk-0Z Can Neural Networks Understand Logical Entailment] and on formal models of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason.{{cite journal | url=https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10992-019-09531-x | doi=10.1007/s10992-019-09531-x | title=Formalizing Kant's Rules | date=2020 | last1=Evans | first1=R. | last2=Sergot | first2=M. | last3=Stephenson | first3=A. | journal=Journal of Philosophical Logic | volume=49 | issue=4 | pages=613–680 | doi-access=free }}[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th2rWQmdyxk&t=105s High-level Perception and Program Synthesis, FLoC, Oxford, 2018]{{cite arXiv | eprint=1910.02227 | last1=Evans | first1=Richard | last2=Hernandez-Orallo | first2=Jose | last3=Welbl | first3=Johannes | last4=Kohli | first4=Pushmeet | last5=Sergot | first5=Marek | title=Making sense of sensory input | date=2019 | class=cs.AI }}
Previously, he designed the AI for a number of computer games. He was the co-founder, along with Emily Short, of Little Text People, developing real-time multiplayer interactive fiction. Little Text People was acquired by Linden Lab in January 2012 for an undisclosed sum.[http://gamasutra.com/view/news/40365/Second_Life_developer_acquires_experimental_game_studio_LittleTextPeople.php Little Text People acquired by Linden Lab] At EA/Maxis, he was the AI lead on The Sims 3.[http://aigamedev.com/open/editorial/2009-awards-results/ Sims 3 won Editor's Pick for Best AI in a AAA Game 2009]
He also designed and implemented the AI for Black & White, for which he received a number of awards.[http://www.gamechoiceawards.com/archive/gdca_2nd.htm Archive/2nd Annual Game Developer Choice Awards] from the Game Developer Choice Awards website[http://www.aaai.org/AITopics/html/archvC2.html AAAI.Org] AAAI.Org[http://www.aiide.org/speakers.html#S2.5 Blurb on Evans] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070611215121/http://www.aiide.org/speakers.html |date=2007-06-11 }} from Invited Speakers list from AIIDE website[http://aigamedev.com/open/review/top-ai-games/ AIGameDev article]
