His work is focused on energy and climate change as well as earthquakes and the regional tectonics of South America. Some of his biggest contributions to the field of Structural geology are the creation of the stereonet mobile{{cite journal |last1=Allmendinger |first1=Richard W. |last2=Siron |first2=Christopher R. |last3=Scott |first3=Chelsea P. |date=1 September 2017 |title=Structural data collection with mobile devices: Accuracy, redundancy, and best practices |url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0191814117301529 |journal=Journal of Structural Geology |volume=102 |pages=98–112 |language=en |doi=10.1016/j.jsg.2017.07.011|bibcode=2017JSG...102...98A |doi-access=free }} and GeolMapDataExtractor GMDE mobile apps,{{cite web |title=GMDE (GeolMapDataExtractor) {{!}} Rick Allmendinger's Stuff |url=http://www.geo.cornell.edu/geology/faculty/RWA/programs/strikedipthickness.html |website=www.geo.cornell.edu}} as well as many other apps and programs.
Academic career
Richard Waldron Allmendinger obtained a BA. in the geological sciences from Cornell University in 1975 where he received distinction in all subjects.{{cite web |title=Tectonics and Structural Geology {{!}} Earth and Atmospheric Sciences |url=https://www.eas.cornell.edu/tectonics-and-structural-geology |website=www.eas.cornell.edu}} He also received a PhD. with a concentration in structural geology from Stanford University in 1979.{{cite web |title=Geological Sciences {{!}} Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability |url=https://earth.stanford.edu/gs |website=earth.stanford.edu}} Allmendinger began his career working as a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey{{cite web |title=USGS.gov {{!}} Science for a changing world |url=https://www.usgs.gov/ |website=www.usgs.gov}} beginning in 1976 through 1985. Also during this time, he worked as a Research Associate (III) at Cornell University{{cite web |title=Tectonics and Structural Geology {{!}} Earth and Atmospheric Sciences |url=https://www.eas.cornell.edu/tectonics-and-structural-geology |website=www.eas.cornell.edu}} from 1980 through 1984. After this, Allmendinger obtained a position starting as an assistant professor at Cornell University that he has kept at through present day where he is currently an Emeritus professor.{{cite web |title=Research & Teaching Faculty {{!}} Earth and Atmospheric Sciences |url=https://www.eas.cornell.edu/eas/academic-staff-directory?faculty_type=63 |website=www.eas.cornell.edu}} He also served as the Associate Dean for the College of Engineering at Cornell from 2008 through 2011.{{cite web |title=Cornell Engineering {{!}} Cornell Engineering |url=https://www.engineering.cornell.edu/ |website=www.engineering.cornell.edu}} Beginning in 2002, he became a Visiting Professor at the Universidad Católica del Norte in Antofagasta, Chile.{{cite web |title=Universidad Católica del Norte |url=https://www.ucn.cl/ |website=Universidad Católica del Norte |language=es}} Allmendinger has been recognized for his work in structural geology by being inducted as a fellow into the Geological Society of America{{cite web |title=Fellowship - Current Fellows |url=https://www.geosociety.org/GSA/About/awards/GSA_Fellows/GSA/Awards/Fellows.aspx |website=www.geosociety.org}}
Honors and awards
In 2021, Allmendinger was awarded the Paul G. Silver Award for Outstanding Scientific Service in large part due to the multitude of free geology software and instruction he has provided to hundreds of thousands of geologists and students, as well as his teaching and research contributions to the field of geology.{{Cite web |title=Richard Allmendinger wins Paul G. Research
Allmendinger’s general research interests include Structural geology and Tectonics, [[earthquake geology, structural geodesy, numerical kinematic modeling, interpretation of seismic reflection profiles, regional tectonics of South America, and field geology. Allmendinger’s main research aims to answer questions such as: what is the composition and structure of the convergent plate boundary in South America? And how does that structure elucidate the geologic expression? In order to answer these questions, Allmedinger uses methods such as seismic interpretation, GPS and satellite imagery, field work and computer modeling. Aside from his research, Richard is renowned and recognized for his technological contributions to the field of geology due to his widely-used apps and programs.{{Cite web |title=Richard W. Allmendinger’s approach to advancing research via technological progression can best be understood by a quote from his own research: “Future technological advances should overcome many of today's uncertainties and provide rich new data to mine by providing denser, more uniform, and temporally continuous observations.”{{Cite journal |last1=Allmendinger |first1=Richard W. |last2=Loveless |first2=John P. |last3=Pritchard |first3=Matthew E. |last4=Meade |first4=Brendan |date=2009-11-01 |title=From decades to epochs: Spanning the gap between geodesy and structural geology of active mountain belts |url=https://scholarworks.smith.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1019&context=geo_facpubs |journal=Journal of Structural Geology |language=en |volume=31 |issue=11 |pages=1409–1422 |doi=10.1016/j.jsg.2009.08.008 |bibcode=2009JSG....31.1409A |issn=0191-8141|url-access=subscription }}
