The Unicode character {{char|’}} (U+2019 {{sc|right single quotation mark}}) is used for both a typographic apostrophe and a single right (closing) quotation mark.{{cite web |url=http://unicode.org/Public/UNIDATA/NamesList.txt |title=Unicode 13.0.0 final names list |publisher=Unicode Consortium |date=2020 |access-date=2020-04-14 |archive-date=2013-12-17 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131217221630/http://unicode.org/Public/UNIDATA/NamesList.txt |url-status=live }} This is due to the many fonts and character sets (such as CP1252) that unified the characters into a single code point, and the difficulty of software distinguishing which character is intended by a user's typing.{{cite web |url=https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/quotes.html |title=ASCII and Unicode quotation marks |first=Markus |last=Kuhn |publisher=University Computing Service, the University of Cambridge |date=11 December 2007 |access-date=25 September 2020 |archive-date=3 October 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201003081727/https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/quotes.html |url-status=live }} There are arguments that the typographic apostrophe should be a different code point, U+02BC modifier letter apostrophe.{{Cite web |url=https://tedclancy.wordpress.com/2015/06/03/which-unicode-character-should-represent-the-english-apostrophe-and-why-the-unicode-committee-is-very-wrong/ |title=Which Unicode character should represent the English apostrophe? The straight apostrophe {{char|'}} (the "ASCII apostrophe", {{unichar|0027|apostrophe}}) is even more ambiguous, as it could also be intended as a left or right quotation mark, or a prime symbol.
