"Ritmo" (also known as "Ritmo (Bad Boys for Life)") is a song by American group Black Eyed Peas and Colombian singer J Balvin, released by Epic Records on October 11, 2019, as the first single from the soundtrack of the 2020 film Bad Boys for Life.{{Cite web |last=Star |first=Regina |date=October 11, 2019 |title=Black Eyed Peas & J Balvin Link Up On Party Jam 'RITMO (Bad Boys For Life)' |url=https://www.iheart.com/content/2019-10-11-black-eyed-peas-j-balvin-link-up-on-party-jam-ritmo-bad-boys-for-life/ |access-date=August 10, 2023 |website=iHeartRadio |language=en}} It is also included on the group's eighth studio album Translation.{{Cite web |last=Amorosi |first=A. Background and composition
The song features a prominent, slowed down sample of the 1993 song "The Rhythm of the Night" by the Italian group Corona (the song is performed by Italian singer Jenny B, the ghost-voice involved in the project).{{Cite magazine|url=https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/latin/8540654/coronas-rhythm-of-the-night-black-eyed-peas-j-balvin-ritmo|title=Comparing Corona's 'Rhythm of the Night' Vs. Jennifer Lopez was originally intended to appear on the remix version, but Jaden Smith, whose father starred in the third film, appeared on the remix instead which was released on the film's soundtrack.{{Cite web |last=Wass |first=Mike |date=December 7, 2020 |title=Jennifer Lopez Jumps On The Remix Of Black Eyed Pea's "RITMO" |url=https://www.idolator.com/7906484/jennifer-lopez-jumps-on-the-remix-of-black-eyed-peas-ritmo-remix |access-date=August 10, 2023 |website=Idolator}}{{cite web| url=https://open.spotify.com/album/0liCj97nJBkS3VNmFBqFke| title = Bad Boys for Life Soundtrack | date = January 17, 2020 | website = Spotify|accessdate = August 19, 2023}}
Live performance
The song was performed live at the closing ceremony of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines.{{cite web| url = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wywBQ6DeuQs | website = YouTube.com | publisher = GMA News | date = December 11, 2019 | accessdate = August 19, 2023 | title = SEA Games 2019: Closing Ceremony - Black Eyed Peas' Ritmo}}
Critical reception
Billboard's writer Jessica Roiz compared "Ritmo" to "The Rhythm of the Night", writing that the first one "fuses Hip-Hop, EDM, and reggaeton, has Spanish and English verses without interrupting the original chorus from "The Rhythm of the Night"".{{Cite magazine |last=Roiz |first=Jessica |date=October 25, 2019 |title=Comparing Corona's 'Rhythm of the Night' Vs. Commercial performance
The song debuted at number 100 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 26, staying on the chart for 27 weeks. It became the Black Eyed Peas' 17th Hot 100 entry and their first since "Don't Stop the Party" peaked at number 86 in 2011, as well as their first top 40 entry since "Just Can't Get Enough" peaked at number 3 in 2011.{{Cite magazine|url=https://www.billboard.com/artist/the-black-eyed-peas/chart-history/hsi/|title=Ritmo (Bad Boys for Life) Chart History|magazine=Billboard|access-date=May 10, 2020}} On Billboard{{'}}s Mainstream Top 40 chart, the song peaked at number 8.{{Cite magazine|url=https://www.billboard.com/artist/the-black-eyed-peas/chart-history/tfm/|title=Ritmo (Bad Boys for Life) Chart History|magazine=Billboard|access-date=May 27, 2020}} The song spent 24 weeks at number one on the Hot Latin Songs chart.{{cite magazine|url=http://www.billboard.com/charts/latin-songs/2020-07-11|title=Hot Latin Songs|date=July 11, 2020|magazine=Billboard|access-date=September 7, 2021}}
Easter Eggs
The first line of the song's rap, "No son ni Reebok ni son Nike" (translates to "They are neither Reebok or Nike"), references a viral clip{{Citation |title=Are those reebok or nike (subtitles) | date=26 April 2014 |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ4c54rCJ_k |access-date=2023-09-21 |language=en}} in which a Dominican radio caller requests Corona's "The Rhythm of the Night" by asking the host to play the song that goes "esos son Reebok o son Nike" (translates to "are those Reebok or Nike"). The moment went viral after the host impressively retrieved the requested song based on that clue alone.
