Use of stem cells for spinal fusion

Dickerman has received attention from the media for performing a controversial procedure to treat patients for back pain, that utilizes the patient's own stem cells.{{cite web|author=Paula |url=http://chronicbackpain-relief.com/patients-own-stem-cells-to-treat-back-pain/ |title=Patient's Own Stem Cells to Treat Back Pain |publisher=Chronicbackpain-relief.com |date= |accessdate=2013-08-16}} For the procedure, stem cells are extracted from the patient's hip with a long needle, condensed in a centrifuge, and placed into small containers (called cages) that are then inserted between degenerating discs in the spine during an operating room procedure.{{cite web|last=Today |first=Cell |url=https://celltoday.wordpress.com/2011/09/13/dallas-doctor-uses-patients-own-stem-cells-to-heal-back-pain/ |title=Dallas Doctor Uses Patient's Own Stem Cells to Heal Back Pain | Cell Today |publisher=Celltoday.wordpress.com |date=2011-09-13 |accessdate=2013-08-16}} Patients then tend to have a shorter recovery time than those receiving traditional spinal fusion (which can take over a year for recovery), a more invasive procedure that uses cadaver bones or a piece of the patient's own hip bone.{{cite web|url=http://orthostreams.com/2011/09/adult-stem-cells-%E2%80%93-roses-of-texas/ |title=Texas spine surgeon finds fusion success by simply injecting adult stem cells into cages |date=2011-09-02 |accessdate=2013-08-16}}{{cite web |last=St |first=Janet |url=http://www.wfaa.com/news/health/Back-patient-uses-stem-cells-to-heal-himself-128331438.html |title=Dallas doctor uses patient's own stem cells to heal back pain | wfaa.com Dallas - Fort Worth |publisher=Wfaa.com |date=2011-08-24 |accessdate=2013-08-16 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20131021025657/http://www.wfaa.com/news/health/Back-patient-uses-stem-cells-to-heal-himself-128331438.html |archivedate=2013-10-21 }} The procedure, which is the same that Texas governor Rick Perry received in 2011, is considered controversial because it is experimental and not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).{{cite web|url=http://www.texastribune.org/texas-people/rick-perry/perrys-surgery-included-experimental-stem-cell-the/ |title=Perry's Surgery Included Experimental Stem Cell Therapy |publisher=The Texas Tribune |date= 3 August 2011|accessdate=2013-08-16}} Following Perry's surgery, he has urged legislators to explore regulation and approval of the procedure, although Celltex (the company that performed Perry's procedure) is currently not allowed to offer treatment in the United States.{{cite journal|author=jobs |url=http://www.nature.com/news/stem-cells-in-texas-cowboy-culture-1.12404 |title=Stem cells in Texas: Cowboy culture : Nature News & Comment |journal=Nature |publisher=Nature.com |date=2013-02-13 |volume=494 |issue=7436 |pages=166–168 |doi=10.1038/494166a |pmid=23407522 |s2cid=4431489 |accessdate=2013-08-16|doi-access=free |url-access=subscription }}{{cite web|url=https://www.cbsnews.com/dfw/news/fda-criticizes-perrys-stem-cell-lab/ |title=FDA Criticizes Perry's Stem Cell Lab « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth |publisher=Dfw.cbslocal.com |date=2012-06-26 |accessdate=2013-08-16}} The procedure is undergoing clinical trials.{{cite web |author1=UC Davis Health System |author2=Public Affairs and Marketing |url=http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/medicalcenter/features/2011-2012/12/20111208_stem-spine.html |title=Stem Cells For Spine Disease - UC Davis Medical Center - UC Davis Health System |publisher=Ucdmc.ucdavis.edu |accessdate=2013-08-16 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20131207090508/http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/medicalcenter/features/2011-2012/12/20111208_stem-spine.html |archivedate=2013-12-07 }}
