Robert Stephen Mallard (born 19 May 1992) is an English actor from Manchester, England, best known for playing Daniel Osbourne in the long-running ITV soap opera Coronation Street (2016–present).

Career

On 14 September 2016, it was announced that Mallard had been cast in Coronation Street as Ken Barlow's (William Roache) youngest son Daniel Osbourne, being the third actor to play the role after Lewis Harney and Dominic Holmes, respectively.{{cite web|url=http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coronation-street/news/a807854/coronation-street-castings-ken-barlows-son-daniel-grandson-adam/|title=Corrie castings! I grew up watching Coronation Street, so the chance to be in it, especially playing a part like Daniel, is very exciting." Producer Kate Oates said, "Daniel is a different Barlow altogether, more sensitive and bookish, he is clearly a chip off the old block, but there is more to Ken's youngest son than meets the eye. Rob is a talented young actor who is perfect for the role". In June 2017, Mallard won the Best Newcomer award at the 2017 British Soap Awards for his portrayal of Daniel.{{cite web|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/british-soap-awards-winners-emmerdale-eastenders_uk_5933182ee4b075bff0f4064e|title=British Soap Awards 2017 Winners: 'Emmerdale' Cleans Up While 'EastEnders' Trails Behind|publisher=HuffPost|date=3 June 2017|access-date=6 November 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170811144033/http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/british-soap-awards-winners-emmerdale-eastenders_uk_5933182ee4b075bff0f4064e|archive-date=11 August 2017|url-status=live}}

Personal life

Mallard is gay. He came out publicly in 2017 in an interview with Gay Times magazine and revealed that his family were supportive of him when he came out to them at the age of 17. He added that he "never planned to keep it quiet" with his only concern being that "if I'm with a female character, will an audience who knows I'm gay in real life believe it? But that was just my own fears because I do believe they will."{{cite web|last=Harp|first=Justin|url=https://www.digitalspy.com/showbiz/a820284/coronation-street-rob-mallard-never-hid-hes-gay/|title=Coronation Street's Rob Mallard opens up on his sexuality: 'I never planned to hide that I'm gay'|access-date=30 December 2018|work=Digital Spy|publisher=Hearst Magazines UK|date=1 February 2017}} Mallard entered a relationship with his Coronation Street co-star, Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy Mayhew, in May 2017.{{cite news|last=Dainty|first=Sophie|title=Coronation Street stars Daniel Brocklebank and Rob Mallard ARE a couple as they confirm romance|url=http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coronation-street/news/a828554/coronation-street-daniel-brocklebank-rob-mallard-dating-confirmed/|access-date=20 May 2017|work=Digital Spy|publisher=Hearst Magazines UK|date=17 May 2017}} They split up that July, but remained good friends.{{cite web|last=Hegarty|first=Tasha|url=http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coronation-street/news/a833153/coronation-streets-rob-mallard-daniel-brocklebank-split-up/|title=Coronation Street stars Rob Mallard and Daniel Brocklebank split up|access-date=14 July 2017|work=Digital Spy|publisher=Hearst Magazines UK|date=14 July 2017}} He began dating modelling agent Matthew Martin in 2023,{{cite news|last=Sansome|first=Jessica|url=https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/tv/coronation-street-stars-real-life-31091310|title=Coronation Street star's real-life partner makes 'surreal' debut in soap and fans may have missed it|newspaper=Manchester Evening News|date=27 February 2025|access-date=8 March 2025}} and in February 2025, he made a cameo in an episode of Coronation Street.{{Cite web |date=2025-02-28 |title=Rob Mallard's real-life boyfriend makes 'surreal' Coronation Street appearance |url=https://metro.co.uk/2025/02/28/rob-mallards-real-life-boyfriend-makes-surreal-coronation-street-appearance-22641942/ |access-date=2025-05-29 |website=Metro |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=Paton |first=Ryan |date=2025-02-27 |title=Corrie fans only just realise Daniel star's real-life partner made soap debut |url=https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/2020302/itv-coronation-street-fans-only-just-realise |access-date=2025-05-29 |website=Express.co.uk |language=en}}
