Robert W. Dutton is an American electrical engineer. At Stanford University, he is the Robert and Barbara Kleist Professor of Electrical Engineering, Emeritus.{{cite web| title=Report of the president: Appointments and promotions | website=Stanford News | date=9 October 2020 | url=https://news.stanford.edu/2020/10/09/report-president-appointments-promotions-5/ | access-date=8 March 2024}} Dutton also served as the undergraduate advisor for Stanford University Department of Electrical Engineering, succeeded by John M. Pauly.
Dutton's research interests include the process of integrated circuits fabrication, and circuit and device design and technology.{{cite web|url=https://www10.edacafe.com/nbc/articles/view_article.php?section=Magazine&articleid=315936|title=Dr. Robert Dutton - The Father of TCAD|website=EDACafe|accessdate=17 November 2018}}{{cite web|url=https://engineering.stanford.edu/people/robert-dutton|title=Robert Dutton|date=12 April 2016|publisher=|accessdate=17 November 2018}}
In 1991, Dutton was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for pioneering contributions to the development of computer-aided modeling of semiconductor devices and fabrication processes.
Education
Dutton attended University of California, Berkeley for his BS (1966), MS (1967), and PhD (1970).{{cite web|url=http://www-tcad.stanford.edu/tcad/bios/dutton.html|title=Robert W. Dutton Biographical Sketch|website=www-tcad.stanford.edu|accessdate=17 November 2018}}
Career
Dutton's research combined fabricating requirements with material sensitivities. His team developed software to characterize the various permutations. The software resulting from Dutton's research; SUPREM, (Stanford University Process Engineering Models) and PISCES (Poisson and Continuity Equation Solver), were adopted by industry.[http://esd-alliance.org/wp-content/uploads/PDFs/PhilKaufmanAward/06-09-07_Kaufman_Award.pdf Kaufman Award]esd-alliance.org {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181117192819/http://esd-alliance.org/wp-content/uploads/PDFs/PhilKaufmanAward/06-09-07_Kaufman_Award.pdf |date=2018-11-17 }}
He founded Technology Modeling Associates (TMA), the first Technology CAD company. TMA was bought by Avant! Corp in 1997.{{cite web | url=https://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1211605 | title=Avanti and Technology Modeling Associates (TMA) Shareholders Approve Merger | date=20 January 1998 }}{{Cite web|url=https://semiengineering.com/entities/technology-modeling-associates-inc/|title=Technology Modeling Associates Inc}} TMA's President and CEO was Roy Jewell.
