Forrest was born in Rostellan and educated at Trinity College DublinWho was Who 1897–1990, London, A & C Black, 1991, {{ISBN|0-7136-3457-X}} and then began his ordained ministry as a curate at Holy Trinity, Dublin, after which he held incumbencies at Liverpool"The Clergy List" London, Hamilton & Co, 1889 and St Jude's South Kensington. He was also a prebendary of St Paul's Cathedral and an Honorary Chaplain to Queen Victoria.
