Playing career

Markram matriculated at Kathu High School in the Northern Cape. He made his senior provincial debut for the {{rut|Griquas}} in 1997 and in the 1998 season he scored 24 tries, which was a Griquas record for most tries in a first-class season. Markram also played for {{rut|Western Province}}, the {{rut|Boland Cavaliers}} and in the Super Rugby competition, for the {{rut|Stormers}}.{{Cite book|title=Who's who of South African rugby 2000|last=Schoeman|first=Chris|date=2000|publisher= Strobe Communications|isbn=0620261889|edition= 5th|location=Cape Town|pages=221|oclc=56517006}}

Markram toured with the Springboks to Britain and Ireland in 1998.
