Born in Hampshire, he was married to actress, Susan Brodrick, from 1971 to 2006, and had three children.

He is best known to American audiences through his portrayal of a Church of England vicar in the television series The Witches and the Grinnygog.{{Cite web|url=https://nostalgiacentral.com/television/tv-by-decade/tv-shows-1980s/witches-and-the-grinnygog-the/|title=Witches and the Grinnygog, The | Nostalgia Central|date=2 July 2016 }} He played Colonel Brandon in the 1981 Jane Austen BBC TV series Sense and Sensibility.
