Luciano Moggi, then general director of Juventus, had described Rosetti and his colleague Pierluigi Collina as being too 'objective' in an intercepted telephone call. Moggi also claimed that Rosetti and Collina should be 'punished' for decisions made against Juventus in that same phonecall.{{cite web |author=© international hazma |title=Roberto Rosetti |url=http://worldreferee.com/site/copy.php?linkID=44&linkType=referee&contextType=bio |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303171327/https://worldreferee.com/site/copy.php?linkID=44&linkType=referee&contextType=bio |archive-date=March 3, 2016 |access-date=19 June 2010 |publisher=WorldReferee.com}}

Rosetti was preselected as a referee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His first match of the tournament was a 1–1 draw between Ghana and Australia. Rosetti sent Australia's Harry Kewell off for handling the ball on the goal line, awarding Ghana a penalty kick. The next game he refereed was the Argentina–Mexico game in the Round of 16, which Argentina won 3–1; the match was surrounded by controversy, however, as Rosetti and his team of officials incorrectly allowed Carlos Tevez's opening goal to stand, even though replays later showed that it should have been ruled out for offside.{{Cite web|url=http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/27062010/58/world-cup-2010-argentina-beat-mexico-face-germany.html|title = Yahoo UK & Ireland - Sports News | Live Scores | Results}}{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/football/2010/jun/28/carlos-tevez-offside-mexico-opener|title=World Cup 2010: Carlos Tevez knew he was offside for Mexico opener|work=The Guardian|date=28 June 2010|access-date=7 November 2017}} Rosetti was later left off the list of 19 referees announced by FIFA to take part in the rest of the competition although football's world governing body did not explain why. This decision affected Rosetti greatly and was the major reason behind his immediate retirement following the tournament, although he denied that it was his error that led him to retire.http://www.chroniclejournal.com/stories_sports.php?id=276382{{dead link|date=December 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}{{cite web|url=https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-fox-m-a-walt-disney-sky-plc/sky-investor-odey-opposes-fox-bid-as-disney-talks-fuel-uncertainty-idUKKBN1D71F4|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171107182501/https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-fox-m-a-walt-disney-sky-plc/sky-investor-odey-opposes-fox-bid-as-disney-talks-fuel-uncertainty-idUKKBN1D71F4|url-status=dead|archive-date=7 November 2017|title=Referee Rosetti steps down after World Cup error|publisher=Reuters|date=8 July 2010|access-date=7 November 2017}}
