The construction of the bridge was allowed because of a settlement with environmental groups that needed to avoid the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The bridge opened to traffic on July 28, 2022, with southbound traffic at 11:40 AM, followed by northbound traffic at 12:20 PM.{{Cite web |date=2022-07-28 |title=Jug Handle Bridge opens to the public |url=https://islandfreepress.org/outer-banks-news/jug-handle-bridge-opens-to-the-public/ |access-date=2022-07-28 |website=Island Free Press |language=en-US |archive-date=2022-07-28 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220728192714/https://islandfreepress.org/outer-banks-news/jug-handle-bridge-opens-to-the-public/ |url-status=live }}
