Her work regarding hadronic structure of high-energy photons outlined a variety of ways in which to study it and has had implications for the design of next generation electron positron colliders. She was an elected fellow of all the three academies of Science of India and also the Science Academy of the Developing World (TWAS).{{cite web|title=Participant Details- India France Technology Summit 2013|url=http://www.indiafrancesummit.org/participants.php?action=view&id=791|access-date=4 April 2014|archive-date=7 April 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140407075233/http://www.indiafrancesummit.org/participants.php?action=view&id=791|url-status=live}}

Apart from her work in academics, Godbole was also a much sought-after communicator of science, often delivering talks to young students, scholars and scientists on everything physics. She was also an avid supporter of women pursuing careers in science and technology, and along with Ram Ramaswamy, edited the book Lilavati’s Daughters,{{Cite news|url=http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-literaryreview/Forgotten-daughters/article15942107.ece|title=Forgotten daughters|date=2009-04-05|work=The Hindu|access-date=2018-03-25|language=en-IN|issn=0971-751X|archive-date=18 December 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191218154214/https://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-literaryreview/Forgotten-daughters/article15942107.ece|url-status=live}}{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=wMTxPgAACAAJ|title=Lilavati's Daughters: The Women Scientists of India|last1=Godbole|first1=Rohini M.|last2=Ramaswamy|first2=Ram|date=2008|publisher=Indian Academy of Sciences|isbn=9788184650051|language=en}}{{Cite book|url=https://www.amazon.in/LILAVATIS-DAUGHTERS-Women-Scientists-India/dp/B00DT7E5UW|title=LILAVATI'S DAUGHTERS- The Women Scientists of India|last=Godbole|first=Rohini|editor-last=Ramaswamy|editor-first=Ram|access-date=25 March 2018|archive-date=25 March 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180325231956/https://www.amazon.in/LILAVATIS-DAUGHTERS-Women-Scientists-India/dp/B00DT7E5UW|url-status=dead}} a collection of biographical essays on women scientists from India.

Life and career

Godbole was born in Pune, in the Indian state of Maharashtra in 1952. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in physics, mathematics and statistics from Sir Parshurambhau College, University of Pune, and later obtained a masters in science degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. She completed here PhD in theoretical particle physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.{{cite web|title=Indian Fellow|url=http://www.insaindia.org/detail.php?id=P03-1334|access-date=29 March 2014|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://archive.today/20140329110408/http://www.insaindia.org/detail.php?id=P03-1334|archive-date=29 March 2014}}{{Cite web|title=Rohini M Godbole |url=http://rmgodbole.in/|access-date=2021-03-06|language=en}}

Godbole joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai as a visiting fellow in 1979. She was Lecturer and Reader at the Department of Physics, University of Bombay from 1982 to 1995. She joined the Centre for High Energy Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, as an associate professor in 1995 and has been a professor since June 1998. Superannuating there by 31 July 2021, she became an honorary professor.

She authored more than 150 research papers, many of which have some of the largest citation indices in her area.

Godbole died on 25 October 2024 at her home in Bangalore from a short-illness at the age of 71.{{cite web |title=Noted physicist Rohini Godbole, a staunch advocate for Indian women in science, passes away |url=https://indianexpress.com/article/india/physicist-rohini-godbole-indian-women-science-passes-away-9638200/ |date=25 October 2024 | website=indianexpress.com}}{{cite web|url=https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/pune-news/renowned-physicist-gender-equity-proponent-rohini-godbole-dies-at-71-101729880612731.html|title=Renowned physicist, gender equity proponent Rohini Godbole dies at 71|publisher=Hindustan Times|date=27 October 2024|accessdate=28 October 2024}}
