The Rolex Series is a series of men's professional golf tournaments played internationally, as part of the European Tour.
History
The series was unveiled for the 2017 season and began with eight events, all with elevated purses in comparison with regular events on the European Tour. The minimum purse for each event was {{currency|7,000,000|USD}}, with the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai having an $8 million purse.{{cite web |url=http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/news/newsid=314790.html |title=European Tour Launches the Rolex Series |publisher=PGA European Tour |date=15 November 2016 |access-date=15 March 2017}}{{cite web |url=http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2017/tournamentid=2017052/news/newsid=318013.html |title=HNA Group named title sponsor of the Open de France |publisher=PGA European Tour |date=9 January 2017 |access-date=15 March 2017}}
The inaugural events as part of the series were:
- BMW PGA Championship
- HNA Open de France
- Dubai Duty Free Irish Open
- Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open
- Italian Open
- The three limited-field no-cut events at the end of the season, which had previously been collectively known as the Final Series:
- Turkish Airlines Open
- Nedbank Golf Challenge
- DP World Tour Championship, Dubai
From the 2019 season onwards, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship became a designated Rolex Series event and the Open de France was relegated to a regular tour event.{{cite web |url=http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/tournament/Season=2019/index_full.html |title=European Tour Schedule 2019 |access-date=30 October 2018}} In 2020, the season was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic; as a result, the Turkish Airlines Open and the Nedbank Golf Challenge were cancelled, and the Irish and Italian Opens were downgraded to regular events.{{cite web |url=https://www.skysports.com/golf/news/12230/12058567/two-rolex-series-events-cancelled-three-new-events-on-european-tour |title=Two Rolex Series events cancelled; three new events on European Tour |website=Sky Sports |date=28 August 2020 |access-date=28 August 2020}}
In 2021, the Rolex Series was reduced to four tournaments; the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. The four events did have increased prize funds up to $8 million however.{{cite news |url=https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/30526309/rolex-series-reduced-4-golf-events-2021-european-tour |title=Rolex Series reduced to 4 golf events for 2021 European Tour |work=ESPN |agency=Associated Press |date=15 December 2020 |access-date=3 August 2021}} The Dubai Desert Classic was added to the series for the 2022 season.{{cite web |url=https://www.europeantour.com/european-tour/rolex/news/articles/detail/slync-io-becomes-new-title-sponsor-of-the-dubai-desert-classic/ |title=Slync.io becomes new title sponsor of the Dubai Desert Classic |publisher=European Tour |access-date=2 September 2021}}
In 2023, all Rolex Series purses were increased to $9 million.{{cite web |url=https://www.europeantour.com/dpworld-tour/rolex/news/articles/detail/young-stars-set-to-take-centre-stage-at-abu-dhabi-hsbc-championship/#:~:text=The%20DP%20World%20Tour%20confirmed%20all%20Rolex%20Series,weeks%20of%20world%20class%20golf%20across%20multiple%20venues. |title=Young stars set to take centre stage at Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship |publisher=European Tour |date=6 January 2023 |access-date=13 February 2023}}
