R. skywalkeri is distinguished from other Romanogobio species by its slender that lacks epithelial crests on the predorsal back, having 12-14 total pectoral-fin rays and 8½ branched dorsal-fin rays.
The specific name of this fish, skywalkeri, honours the hero of the Star Wars film Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope, Luke Skywalker, comparing the greenish hue of this fish with the colour of Skywalker's Lightsaber.{{cite web | url = https://etyfish.org/gobionidae/ | title = Family GOBIONIDAE Bleeker 1863 (Freshwater Gudgeons) | access-date = 2 March 2025 | author = Christopher Scharpf | work = The ETYFish Project Fish Name Etymology Database | publisher = Christopher Scharpf | date = 24 January 2025 }}
