Rowan Sawers{{Cite web|url=https://www.gg.gov.au/sites/default/files/2022-01/ad22_gazette_-_o_of_a.pdf|title=January 2022 Gazette}} {{post-nominals|country=AUS|size=100|OAM}} (born 19 October 1954) is a former Australian rules football field umpire and umpire coach in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Career
Over a career that spanned 21 seasons at the highest level, Sawers became the first field umpire to reach the 400-game milestone at senior VFL/AFL level, eventually retiring after 410 games, which included four VFL/AFL Grand finals and 31 other finals. In addition, he umpired eight State-of-Origin games and was involved in two International Rules tours to Ireland.
Sawers was recruited from the Southern Umpires' Association in Seaford, Victoria. He began umpiring in the Victorian Football Association in 1975,{{citation|page=5|title=Recorder|publisher=Victorian Football Association|date=24 September 1989}} and began his Victorian Football League career in 1977. He was selected to officiate his first senior VFL match in Round 7 of the 1977 VFL season with Ian Robinson between {{AFL StK}} and {{AFL SM}} at Moorabbin Oval. In a memorable umpiring debut, the Saints staged a mighty comeback in the final quarter to snatch a draw, but Sawers' main recollection was of his first bounce "My first bounce in League football didn't bounce – the ball got stuck in the mud. Paul Callery, the St Kilda rover, plucked the Sherrin out of the bog and played on."{{Cite web |title=Wayback Machine |url=http://www.aflua.com.au/pdf/AFLUA_team_of_the_century.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110222024831/http://www.aflua.com.au/pdf/AFLUA_team_of_the_century.pdf |archive-date=2011-02-22 |access-date=2025-06-06 |website=www.aflua.com.au}}
Sawers eventually overtook former colleague Ian Robinson in Round 16 of the 1995 AFL season, officiating his 354th senior VFL/AFL match at The Gabba between {{AFL BB}} and {{AFL Haw}}
His games record stood until 2007 when it was passed by Hayden Kennedy.
Sawers also umpired eight State of Origin games, two International rules football tours to Ireland, and at least one VFA grand final.
He is currently a member of the AFL's Laws of the Game Committee and head coach of umpiring in the Essendon District Football League Umpires Association.{{Cite web |url=http://www.edflua.org.au/index.php?option=com_contact&view=contact&id=1%3Afish&catid=12%3Asnr-appoint-contacts&Itemid=11 |title=Rowan Sawers |access-date=23 August 2014 |archive-date=26 August 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140826120014/http://www.edflua.org.au/index.php?option=com_contact&view=contact&id=1%3Afish&catid=12%3Asnr-appoint-contacts&Itemid=11 |url-status=dead }} He was the head umpire coach for AFL umpires for many years.
