It was constructed in 1985{{Cite web|url=http://www.weeklystandard.com/article/streets-paris/823391|title=The Streets of Paris|date=2015-01-19|website=Weekly Standard|access-date=2016-04-24|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160307101449/https://www.weeklystandard.com/article/streets-paris/823391|archive-date=2016-03-07}} and named in honor of Nicolas Appert (1749-1841), a French businessman who invented airtight food preservation.

On 7 January 2015, the offices of the satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo at 10 rue Nicolas-Appert were attacked by Islamist terrorists. A commemorative plaque on the building records the names of eleven of the twelve people who were killed there.
