The character devolves into pain, self-destruction, and abuse after being subjected to bullying by his peers in high school. The film also shows the lack of adult intervention which causes Cal to grow up into an individual lacking a moral compass.{{Cite web|url=https://heavy.com/entertainment/2019/07/cameron-boyce-last-movies-release-dates/|title=Cameron Boyce's Last Movies & Shows: Release Date for 'Descendants 3'|last=Orfanides|first=Effie|date=July 7, 2019|website=Heavy.com|language=en|access-date=July 19, 2019}}
