Service history

The S2 was created along with the S1 and S3 on 9 January 1984, when the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) took over the S-Bahn network from the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn in West Berlin: the S2 initially ran between Lichtenrade and Anhalter Bahnhof, before being extended northwards to Gesundbrunnen on 1 May 1984, and Frohnau on 1 October 1984.{{cite web|title=How the S-Bahn got its numbers|url=https://sbahn.berlin/aktuelles/artikel/wie-die-s-bahn-zu-ihren-nummern-kam#c21295|website=S-Bahn Berlin|publisher=Deutsche Bahn|access-date=18 May 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230518233609/https://sbahn.berlin/aktuelles/artikel/wie-die-s-bahn-zu-ihren-nummern-kam#c21295|archive-date=18 May 2023|location=Berlin|language=de|date=9 June 2021}}

In 1990, the S1 replaced the S2 between Gesundbrunnen and Frohnau.{{cite web|title=Berliner Nahverkehrsnetz – Schnellbahnnetz|url=https://file1.hpage.com/003497/13/bilder/s_u-bahn_netz_199091.jpg|website=Berliner Linienchronik|publisher=Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe|access-date=19 May 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230519002335/https://file1.hpage.com/003497/13/bilder/s_u-bahn_netz_199091.jpg|archive-date=19 May 2023|location=Berlin|language=de|date=November 1990}}
