SS Empire Dell was a {{GRT|7065}} CAM ship that was built in 1941 by Lithgows Ltd, Port Glasgow, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She served until May 1942, when she was torpedoed and sunk by {{GS|U-124|1940|2}} whilst a member of Convoy ONS 92.

The ship was {{convert|432|ft|2|in|m|2}} long, with a beam of {{convert|56|ft|2|in|m|2}}. She had a depth of {{convert|34|ft|2|in|m|2}} and a draught of {{convert|26|ft|3|in|m|2}}. The ship was propelled by a {{convert|436|ihp|kW|lk=on}} triple expansion steam engine, which had cylinders of {{convert|23+1/2|in|cm}}, {{convert|37+1/2|in|cm}} and {{convert|68|in|cm}} diameter by {{convert|48|in|cm}} stroke. The engine was built by Rankin & Blackmore Ltd, Greenock.

She could embark and operate a Hawker Sea Hurricane aircraft via a catapult. Her crew numbered 41, plus seven Royal Air Force (RAF) personnel.

History

Empire Dell was built for the MoWT. She was launched on 26 May 1941. Laden with grain, she departed from Halifax on 10 August as a member of Convoy HX 144, which arrived at Liverpool on 30 August. She departed from Halifax a week later and sailed to Sydney, arriving the next day. Empire Dell departed from Cardiff on 22 November and sailed to Liverpool, arriving on 24 November. Empire Dell departed from Huelva on 7 January 1942 for Gibraltar, arriving the same day. Empire Dell was a member of Convoy ON 92, which departed from Liverpool on 6 May and arrived at Halifax on 21 May.{{cite web |url=http://www.convoyweb.org.uk/on/index.html?onz.php?convoy=92!~onzmain |title=Convoy ON.92 |publisher=Convoyweb |access-date=11 June 2011}} At around 02:00 (German time) on 12 May, Empire Dell was hit by a torpedo fired by {{GS|U-124|1940|2}}, which was under the command of Kapitänleutnant Johann Mohr. U-124 was operating as part of Wolf pack Hecht.{{cite web |url=http://uboat.net/ops/wolfpacks/31.html |title=Hecht (e. Twenty-one survivors were rescued by the convoy rescue ship {{SS|Bury||2}} and 25 were rescued by {{HMCS|Shediac|K110|6}}. They were landed at St John's, Newfoundland on 17 and 16 May respectively.
