SS Pontic was a tender and baggage vessel of the White Star Line that was built in 1894 by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, United Kingdom.{{csr|register=MSI|id=1102143|shipname=Pontic |accessdate=8 January 2020}} She was sold in 1919 and continued in that role. In 1925, she was sold and used as a collier. She was scrapped in 1930.

Description

Pontic was {{convert|150|ft|5|in|m|2}} long, with a beam of {{convert|26|ft|1|in|m|2}} and a depth of {{convert|11|ft|1|in|m|2}}.{{cite web |url=https://plimsoll.southampton.gov.uk/shipdata/pdfs/30/30b0949.pdf |title=LLOYD'S REGISTER, NAVIRES A VAPEUR ET A MOTEURS |publisher=Plimsoll Ship Data |accessdate=12 September 2011}} Pontic was propelled by a 62 bhp triple expansion steam engine, which had cylinders of {{convert|13|in|cm}}, {{convert|21|in|cm}} and {{convert|34|in|cm}} diameter by {{convert|24|in|cm}} stroke. The engine was built by Harland & Wolff. History

The ship was launched on 3 February 1894 from the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast. She was delivered on 13 April that year. The United Kingdom official number 102143 and code letters NJFK were allocated. Her port of registry was Liverpool, Lancashire.

While in the Manchester Ship Canal on 3 May 1902, the Pontic, carrying a cargo of coal, collided with a Welsh steamer named Shahristan and was badly damaged.{{Cite web|url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000272/19021209/077/0005|title=Register | British Newspaper Archive}}

On 23 January 1925, Pontic was sold to John Donaldson's Beardmore Steam Ship Co Ltd. She was placed under the management of Beardmore Donaldson Coal Trimmers Ltd and used as a collier and sand carrier. Pontic was scrapped at a Clyde shipbreakers in 1930.
