STASY was created in 2011, as a merger of the Athens–Piraeus Electric Railways (ISAP), the Attiko Metro Operation Company (AMEL), and Tram S.A., and its logo is an amalgamation of the oval-shaped format of ISAP's logo, and the blue and green colours from AMEL's logo.

History

On 28 February 2011, the Greek Government enacted Law 3920/2011, which allowed the Attiko Metro Operation Company (AMEL) to merge with the Athens–Piraeus Electric Railways (ISAP) and Tram S.A. to form Urban Rail Transport S.A., or STASY as it is commonly known.{{cite journal|title=Law 3920/2011: Consolidation, restructuring and urban development of transport of the Attica Region, and connected purposes|journal=Government Gazette|date=3 March 2011|volume=2011|issue=33|pages=1265–1276|series=Α|publisher=National Printing House|location=Athens|language=Greek}} The merged company, which came into effect on 17 June 2011 under Ministerial Decree 28737/2637,{{cite journal|title=Decree 28737/2637: Merger of AMEL, ISAP and TRAM S.A. to form a new public company called STASY S.A.|journal=Government Gazette|date=17 June 2011|volume=2011|issue=1454|pages=19812–19815|series=Β|publisher=National Printing House|location=Athens|language=Greek}} became a subsidiary of Transport for Athens (OASA). Three different companies used to operate and maintain the Athens Metro and Athens Tram network before the creation of STASY:

  • Line 1 of the Metro used to be operated by the Athens–Piraeus Electric Railways ({{langx|el|Ηλεκτρικοί Σιδηρόδρομοι Αθηνών Πειραιώς}}; ISAP): ISAP was created as a public company on 1 January 1976, to replace the privately-owned Hellenic Electric Railways (EIS).{{cite web|last1=Gklavas|first1=Athanasios|title=Athens–Piraeus Electric Railways (ISAP)|url=https://www.greekrailtickets.gr/HSAP.htm|website=Greek Railway Tickets|access-date=7 November 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221107214018/https://www.greekrailtickets.gr/HSAP.htm|archive-date=7 November 2022|language=Greek|date=22 May 2022}}{{cite journal|title=Law 352/1976: The establishment of ISAP to replace EIS|journal=Government Gazette|date=16 June 1976|volume=1976|issue=33|pages=1015–1018|series=Α|publisher=National Printing House|location=Athens|language=Greek}} ISAP came under the authority of OASA in 1998.{{cite web|title=Company Profile|url=http://www.isap.gr/eng/page.asp?id=42|website=Athens Piraeus Electric Railways|access-date=6 November 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120113142708/http://www.isap.gr/eng/page.asp?id=42|archive-date=13 January 2012|location=Athens|date=13 January 2012}}{{cite journal|title=Law 2669/1998: Organisation and operation of public transport in Athens, Piraeus and the surrounding area|journal=Government Gazette|date=18 December 1998|volume=1998|issue=283|page=4373|series=Α|publisher=National Printing House|location=Athens|language=Greek}}
  • Lines 2 and 3 of the Metro used to be operated by the Attiko Metro Operation Company ({{langx|el|Αττικό Μετρό Εταιρεία Λειτουργίας}}; AMEL): AMEL was created on 15 February 2001, as an operational subsidiary of public transport developer and constructor Attiko Metro (now Elliniko Metro), instead of OASA.{{cite journal|title=Notice of registration in the Register of Limited Companies of the formation of a Limited Company under the name Attiko Metro Operation Company|journal=Government Gazette|date=19 February 1998|volume=2001|issue=1092|page=3|series=ΑΕ-ΕΠΕ|publisher=National Printing House|location=Athens|language=Greek}}{{cite web|title=AMEL S.A.|url=http://www.amel.gr/index.php?id=56&L=1|website=Attiko Metro Operation Company|access-date=6 November 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080916093923/http://www.amel.gr/index.php?id=56&L=1|archive-date=16 September 2008|location=Athens|date=24 January 2008}}
