Hain was born in Hong Kong to two British parents. His family settled on Australia's Gold Coast when Hain was three years of age and there he began playing cricket for the Mudgeeraba-Nerang Cricket Club. He was raised in the Australian beachside city until the age of 14 when he relocated to Scotland on an exchange program with the Loretto School in Musselburgh, East Lothian.{{Cite web|title=Sam Hain: The Australian-raised county star looking to play for England|url=https://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/sam-hain-the-australianraised-county-star-looking-to-play-for-england/news-story/913331765f0370e47ca7713ef66e7a89|access-date=2021-11-22|website=|publisher=Fox Sports Australia}} He was fast-tracked into Australian Under-19 cricket side as a 16-year-old.{{Cite web|date=|title=Australia frustrated at losing young stars Sam Robson and Sam Hain|url=http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/jul/28/australia-sam-robson-sam-hain-england|access-date=2021-06-30|work=The Guardian|language=en}} As a Loretto School student, he was spotted by former Warwickshire captain Michael Powell, who was coaching there.{{Cite web|title=Hain's maturity a lesson to Middlesex|url=https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/lv-county-championship-division-one-2014-691689/warwickshire-vs-middlesex-692753/match-report|access-date=2021-06-30|website=|publisher=ESPNcricinfo|language=en}} He returned to the Gold Coast for Year Twelve education where he completed his schooling at The Southport School.{{Cite web|date=|title=Gold Coast teenager Sam Hain has record-breaking cricket season in English County Championship|url=https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/sport/gold-coast-teenager-sam-hain-has-recordbreaking-cricket-season-in-english-county-championship/news-story/644ae3334023737a9df138d4182e0df0|access-date=2021-06-30|website=|publisher=Gold Cost Bulletin|language=en}}
Hain was sent for trials at Warwickshire where former England all-rounder Rikki Clarke rated his new colleague's batting in the nets as the best he had ever seen.{{Cite web |date= |title=Who Is Sam Hain? |url=https://www.wisden.com/cricket-news/who-is-sam-hain |access-date=9 April 2025 |website= |publisher=Wisden |language=en-GB}} Hain made his debut for the club's 2nd XI that year and impressed sufficiently to win Warwickshire's most promising young player award.
