Playing career
Scholl started his playing career at Tacoma Community College for two seasons before transferring to the University of San Diego to complete his playing eligibility under Brad Holland with the San Diego Toreros.{{cite web|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/sam-scholl-1.html|title=Sam Scholl College Stats - College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com|website=College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com}}
Coaching career
After graduation, Scholl joined Holland's staff and stayed with the Toreros for seven seasons, where he was part of the team's 2003 NCAA tournament appearance.{{cite web|url=http://www.usdtoreros.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/sam_scholl_964591.html|title=usdtoreros.com Sam Scholl Bio - University of San Diego Official Athletic Site University of San Diego Official Athletic Site - Men's Basketball|publisher=}} In 2007, Scholl joined Kerry Keating's staff at Santa Clara, where he stayed until 2015, and was a part of the school's 2011 CIT Championship and 2013 CBI Championship winning squads.{{cite web|url=http://www.santaclarabroncos.com/sports/m-baskbl/coaches/scholl_sam00.html?view=bio|title=Santa Clara|website=Santa Clara}}
Scholl rejoined the Toreros staff under Lamont Smith.
