Samarium(III) iodide is an inorganic compound, a salt of samarium and hydroiodic acid with the chemical formula {{chem|Sm|I|3}}.{{cite journal |last1=Zhang |first1=Yuanmin |title=Samarium Triiodide |journal=Synlett |pages=1638–1639 |language=en |doi=10.1055/s-0030-1260781 |date=6 November 2011|volume=2011 |issue=11 |doi-access=free }}{{cite web |title=Samarium(III) Iodide |url=https://www.americanelements.com/samarium-iii-iodide-13813-25-7 |website=American Elements |publisher=American Elements |access-date=8 August 2021 |language=en}}
Synthesis
Samarium(III) iodide is prepared by the reaction of metallic samarium and iodine:{{cite journal |last1=Molodkin |first1=A. K. |last2=Karagodina |first2=A. M. |last3=Tupolev |first3=V. :{{chem2 | 2 Sm + 3 I2 -> 2 SmI3 }}
Properties
Samarium(III) iodide is a yellow powder that is unstable in air and decomposes in water (hydrolysis). When heated with metallic samarium, it forms samarium diiodide:{{cite journal |last1=Imamoto |first1=Tsuneo |last2=Ono |first2=Mitsumasa |title=The Reaction of Samarium(III) Iodide with Samarium Metal in Tetrahydrofuran, A New Method for the Preparation of Samarium(II) Iodide |journal=Chemistry Letters |date=5 March 1987 |volume=16 |issue=3 |pages=501–502 |doi=10.1246/cl.1987.501 |issn=0366-7022|doi-access=free }}
:{{chem2 | 2SmI3 + Sm -> 3 SmI2 }}
Reduction by hydrogen also affords samarium diiodide upon heating:
:{{chem2 | 2 SmI3 + H2 -> 2 SmI2 + 2 HI }}
Applications
The compound is commercially available and used in organic reactions as a catalyst.
