San Remigio, officially the Municipality of San Remigio ({{langx|krj|Banwa kang San Remigio}}; {{langx|hil|Banwa sang San Remigio}}; {{langx|tl|Bayan ng San Remigio}}), is a municipality in the province of Antique, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 34,045 people.{{PH census|current}} Making it 10th most populous municipality in the province of Antique and the largest municipality in terms of land area, with a total area of 406.98 square kilometers.

History

Geography

San Remigio is located at {{coord|format=dms}}. It is {{convert|21|km}} north-east from the provincial capital, San Jose de Buenavista.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the municipality has a land area of {{convert|406.98|km2}}{{PSGC detail|area}} constituting {{percentage|406.98|2,729.17|2|pad=yes}} of the {{convert|2,729.17|km2|2|adj=mid|-}} total area of Antique.

Almost 70% of its land area are mountainous and the remaining 30% comprise the flat lowland and rolling hills.

Agriculture occupies {{convert|47.815|km2}} of land. Of this, {{convert|44.37|km2}} is for food crops, {{convert|1.035|km2}} is for permanent crops, and {{convert|2.41|km2}} for commercial crops.

Economy

The municipality of San Remigio produced{{when|date=November 2016}} a total of 13,074.02 metric tons of palay in an area of {{convert|41.87|km2}} of which only 22.00% are irrigated and the rest are rain fed and upland area.

San Remigio has a road network of {{convert|187.452|km}}. Based on administrative classification, {{convert|42.696|km}} are municipal roads and {{convert|136.124|km}} are barangay roads. There are eleven bridges in the municipality with a total length of {{convert|321.391|km}}.

One major contributor to the economic activity of the town is the remittances of the overseas contract workers.

Natural attractions

San Remigio is host to natural attractions like the Igbaclag Cave, Bato Cueva, Kanyugan Cave, Magpungay Cave, Pula Falls, Timbaban Falls and Batuan Falls, the lakes of Maylumboy and Danao, the stone of Datu Sumakwel, Bato Bintana and White Castle Stone, and the mountain ranges of San Remigio.{{cite web|title=San Remigio|url=http://www.antique.gov.ph/san-remigio/|publisher=Official Antique Website|accessdate=11 February 2013|year=2012}} The rivers are rich with gem stones and the biggest flower Rafflesia can be seen in the upland barangays of Tubudan and La Union.

Religious pilgrimage

Every April thousands of people from Antique and nearby provinces go to the Diocesan Shrine of St. Vincent Ferrer of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente in Barangay Baladjay. From April 1 until the last Sunday of April, which is the celebration of its feast day, masses are offered daily.
