Early life and career
Hayward grew up in Oxfordshire in a single-parent family, in which her mother worked in low paid jobs and she worked as a 12-year-old to supplement her mother's earnings. She describes this as a defining moment attracting her to socialism.{{cite web|url=http://www.hamhigh.co.uk/news/politics/council_leader_sarah_hayward_having_to_lend_mum_money_at_the_age_of_12_was_defining_1_3883274 |title=Council leader Sarah Hayward: 'Having to lend mum money at the age of 12 was defining' - Politics - Hampstead Highgate Express |publisher=Hamhigh.co.uk |date=11 December 2014 |accessdate=23 June 2017}} She graduated from the University of Hull with a degree in law and politics. She then moved to London and worked at Sainsbury's for two years, before joining a publishing company. She joined the Ministry of Defence before resigning in protest over the Invasion of Iraq. Hayward says she was drawn to Camden by a "love of grungy pubs and even grungier music".

She has represented the King's Cross ward since 2010 and entered Cabinet as Member for Communities, Regeneration and Equalities.Communities, Regeneration and Equalities She currently serves as a member of the Health and Wellbeing Board and a number of sub-committees.{{cite web|url=http://democracy.camden.gov.uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=166 |title=Camden Council: Councillor details - Councillor Sarah Hayward |publisher=Democracy.camden.gov.uk |date= |accessdate=23 June 2017}} In 2013 she strongly defended the council against a report by the Taxpayers Alliance{{cite web|url=http://news.fitzrovia.org.uk/2013/05/10/sarah-hayward-tax-payers-alliance-report-is-inaccurate-robert-oxley-lying/ |title=Sarah Hayward says Tax Payers' Alliance report "is inaccurate" and Robert Oxley "is lying" – Fitzrovia News |publisher=News.fitzrovia.org.uk |date= 10 May 2013|accessdate=23 June 2017}} on Channel 5 News.
