Personal history

A mixed-race black woman, Reed's mental health problems began in 2003 after the sudden death of her baby daughter.{{cite news|last=Jasper|first=Lee|url=https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jul/24/sarah-reed-death-avoidable-mental-illness-holloway-prison|title=Those who failed Sarah Reed must be held to account|work=The Guardian|date=24 July 2017|access-date=2 July 2020}}{{cite news|last1=Omonira-Oyekanmi|first1=Rebecca|last2=Daniju|first2=Wasi|url=https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/shine-a-light/remembering-sarah-reed|title=Remembering Sarah Reed|work=OpenDemocracy|date=13 February 2016|access-date=2 July 2020}}{{cite news|last=Davies|first=Caitlin|url=https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/5050/bad-girls-in-holloway-prison-black-women-extract|title='Bad girls' in Holloway prison: when being a 'loud' black woman was an offence in itself|work=OpenDemocracy|date=30 August 2018|access-date=2 July 2020}} Along with the baby's father, she was given the wrapped remains to take to the undertakers in a taxi.{{cite news|last=Revesz|first=Rachael|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/sarah-reed-latest-news-prison-officer-ambulance-delay-holloway-prison-woman-body-found-dead-cell-a7823411.html|title=Sarah Reed: Prison officer 'told to delay calling ambulance' after woman's body found dead in cell|work=The Independent|date=4 July 2017|access-date=2 July 2020}} In 2012, Reed was the victim of a severe attack from a white police officer PC James Kiddie, and suffered two broken ribs. While in the psychiatric Maudsley Hospital in 2014, Reed told her family that she was sexually assaulted by an elderly male patient; some reports say this was a case of attempted rape. After reportedly acting in self-defence, she was charged with GBH with intent and held in Holloway prison on remand from October 2015 for psychiatric assessment to determine whether she was able to plead at trial. The report had not been written by the time of her death in January 2016, nor had a letter been sent to ensure her transfer to a more appropriate secure psychiatric facility. Her anti-psychotic drugs were reduced out of other health fears, but nothing was substituted; her health worsened. The staff's monitoring of Reed was reduced from twice to once an hour when she was moved to a different unit; although it was known she had self-harmed in the past, Reed was considered at low-risk.{{cite news|last=Taylor|first=Diane|date=4 July 2017|url=https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jul/04/sarah-reed-mentally-ill-woman-died-in-cell-after-monitoring-was-reduced-inquest-hears|title=Mentally ill woman died in cell after monitoring was reduced, inquest hears|work=The Guardian|access-date=18 August 2020}}

On 11 January 2016, in Holloway prison's medical wing, Reed was found to be unresponsive on her prison bed with strips of linen around her neck. The Ministry of Justice said that CPR was attempted, but she was pronounced dead shortly after she was found. She suffered from bulimia, paranoid schizophrenia, and engaged in alcohol and substance abuse. A vigil was held outside Holloway prison in February 2016 on the day of her funeral.{{cite news|last1=Ashenden|first1=Amy|last2=Mann|first2=Sebastian|url=https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/sarah-reed-hundreds-gather-at-vigil-for-police-attack-victim-who-died-in-cell-at-holloway-prison-a3176451.html|title=Sarah Reed: Hundreds gather at vigil for police attack victim who died in cell at Holloway Prison|work=Evening Standard|date=9 February 2016|access-date=2 July 2020}}
