Critical reception
The i and The Daily Mirror were not impressed with the opening episode; Sara Wallis wrote "This soap opera-style comedy was not my cup of Yorkshire. But let’s hope it warms up." Emily Baker, writing in The i, said "BBC One’s new comedy Scarborough is missing one key element – humour", continuing with "Scarborough’s complete lack of laughs is more frustrating than upsetting."{{cite news |last1=McDonald |first1=Corinne |title=BBC SCARBOROUGH: This is what the national press thought of episode one |url=https://www.thescarboroughnews.co.uk/news/people/bbc-scarborough-this-is-what-the-national-press-thought-of-episode-one-1-9985556 |access-date=15 October 2019 |work=The Scarborough News |date=10 September 2019}}
Michael Hogan, writing in The Daily Telegraph, was more positive about the start of the sitcom stating that whilst it was "not an unqualified success", but that it was "...a promising start." Of particular note for Hogan was Claire Sweeney as Hayley; "[Sweeney] hammed it up Dynasty-style as the local man-eater, all hairspray, leopardskin and cat-clawed one-liners (“I might be a slag and a home-wrecker but I’m very good at both”)."{{cite news |last=Hogan |first=Michael |title=Scarborough episode 1 review: a coastal mix of Peter Kay's Car Share and a Victoria Wood off-cut |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2019/09/06/scarborough-episode-1-review-coastal-mix-peter-kays-car-share/ |access-date=15 October 2019 |work=The Telegraph |date=6 September 2019}} Likewise, in The Guardian, Graeme Virtue was in admiration of Sweeney's on-screen character, saying "...Sweeney brings some powerful energy as the local man-eater."{{cite news |last1=Virtue |first1=Graeme |last2=Bradley |first2=Mike |last3=Verdier |first3=Hannah |last4=Seale |first4=Jack |last5=Howlett |first5=Paul |title=TV tonight: Benidorm's creator turns his attention to Scarborough |url=https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/sep/06/tv-tonight-benidorms-creator-turns-his-attention-to-scarborough |access-date=15 October 2019 |work=The Guardian |date=6 September 2019}}
