The Scholars Strategy Network (SSN) is an association of academics and researchers who coordinate to address public challenges while increasing the accessibility of their findings to those outside of academia.{{Cite web|url=https://www.huffpost.com/entry/paul-ryan-budget-plan-targeted-progressive-academics_n_1752507|title=Paul Ryan Budget Plan Targeted By Progressive Academics|first=Sabrina|last=Siddiqui|date=August 7, 2012|website=HuffPost}}{{Cite web|url=https://harvardmagazine.com/2013/02/environmentalist-failure-to-pass-cap-and-trade|title=The Politics of Climate Change Legislation|date=February 15, 2013|website=Harvard Magazine}}
While the work of individual SSN members is typically published in academic journals, the organization encourages its members to write "briefs" about current issues.{{Cite web|url=http://www.scholarsstrategynetwork.org/content/social-scientists-seek-new-ways-influence-public-policy|last=McMurtrie |first=Beth |title=Social Scientists Seek New Ways to Influence Public Policy. |work=The Chronicle of Higher Education|date=30 August 2013 |access-date=17 November 2013}}{{Cite web|url=https://themonkeycage.org/2012/06/scholars-strategy-network/|author-link1=Erik Voeten |first=Erik |last=Voeten |website=themonkeycage.org |title=Scholars Strategy Network|date=June 6, 2012}} These shorter pieces, written in consideration of a lay audience, are published on the organization's website.{{cite news |url=http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/09/24/how-legislators-view-their-constituents.html |last=Tomasky |first=Michael |title=How Legislators View Their Constituents |work=The Daily Beast |date=24 September 2013 |access-date=17 November 2013 }}
The idea for the Scholars Strategy Network with an associated website was originally conceived of in 2009 by sociologist and political scientist Theda Skocpol. The association is backed by donors Robert Bowditch, Jr. and David desJardins, both of whom are affiliated with the progressive Democracy Alliance, but the Scholars Strategy Network does not take formal positions on policy questions or support or oppose particular political candidates.{{cite web |url=http://news2.sanford.duke.edu/newsletters/Insights11_12.pdf |author=Stanford Insights Staff |title=Stanford Professors Join Scholars Strategy Network to Engage with Public |work=Stanford Insights |date=Fall 2012 |access-date=4 December 2013 }}
Regional networks
An SSN Regional Network includes scholars who live or work in that region, and each is coordinated by a leader or co-leaders who set the regional agenda and organize discussions and public events.{{Cite web|url=http://www.dukechronicle.com/articles/2013/03/21/experts-explore-who-controls-government|last=Shan |first=Tony |title=Experts explore who controls government |work=The Duke Chronicle |date=20 March 2013 |access-date=17 November 2013}}
